Our first big project of the year is done! We lime washed our brick fireplace. Obviously the room isn’t done yet but it looks so much better.
I hate the mantel, so once we get furniture in the room I’ll be back to ask for suggestions on that.
ETA: Thought I'd share some addition info in case anyone's interested. We spent about 2-3 hours taping, painting and distressing and the materials cost about $50. The process wasn't difficult, just a bit tedious. Limewash is very forgiving, so we did a couple rounds of touching up to get it just the way we wanted. If you your fireplace surround has soot on it, I recommend cleaning that off as much as possible before starting.
Question: Has anyone painted inside a fireplace? If so, how was the process and how did you like the results? Rustoleum makes a gray spray paint that withstands up to 2000* and I'm tempted. Our fireplace gas, but previous owners burned wood in it so there are soot stains on the inside. I cleaned it for hours and tried 4 different products and still couldn't get most of it off.
Good work! I've painted inside a fireplace, I used a Rustoleum product that specially made for high heat. Mine was black and I just painted it on. It looked rellly nice! Be careful along the ledge of the hearth - its hard to keep a straight line because the paint bleeds into the pourus brick. My guess is noone else noticed, but ti bothered me! :-)

Looks great! Your fireplace area is like mine but no shelving above the bottom cabinets. I have never even considered changing the brick but that looks nice. Are you doing other updates? What is your overall style?

Eventually we’ll mount the tv and get rid of the detailing on the top of the shelves (what’s that thing called?) so that it just goes straight across. I also want to replace the mantel but I’m not sure what with. We also need to re-cover the window seat cushion and paint the back door (in the room but not pictured)
We don’t really have a style yet - what we have is mostly odds and ends from our condo. On a whim we bought a navy blue sofa that arrives this week, and we’ll go from there.
And now, it is driving me nuts that I can't think what that board is called. I can only come up with cornice, and I don't think that's it.
A few years ago, we removed the decorative trim and that board from our cabinets, and replaced with crown molding on the cabinets. I can't believe how much it updated!
My H calls it a valance but I don't think that's right either. I've been dying to change them but we don't have a saw yet (we just moved from a condo where we had no place to store and use tools) so it's been on the back burner.

Would you need a saw for that, or is it just nailed on? I'm obviously over invested in your trim. In any event, the room looks great. Nice staging of the shelves, too.
Thank you! Because of how the shelves are framed, we can't just take it off. We'll have to replace it with a straight piece of trim, which will need to be cut to size. There is so much shoddy and awkwardly-done DIY in our house that nothing is an easy fix.
Another quick and easy update would be to replace the cabinet door handles. That doesn’t require tools (generally).
We did replace the cabinet door handles... 😳
ETA: the top picture isn’t a true “before” - we painted the walls, shelves, cabinets and trim and installed new handles and concealed hinges before we started the fireplace.

I honestly didn’t look that closely at the photos on my phone. I just mentioned it as a way to update dated cabinetry since you were planning a lot of other work. My bad!

Changing the hardware did make a huge difference! I’m I’m tempted to do all the cabinets in the house now but trying to focus on one project at a time.

We have a tv in that spot. Our couch is blue too and we are currently furnishing that space.
