So we picked our contractor and we're meeting to select finishes this weekend!
In short we're moving a wall and taking 34" from an adjacent room (former bedroom, now study/laundry), adding a second closet to our bedroom for DH, adding French doors to the study, installing a larger double window w/lower shutters in the bathroom, heated floors, freestanding tub, 72" vanity, etc. We're also getting a new electrical panel

I'll be back w/before pics and other questions/thoughts. Overall, I'm going for a relatively traditional design, neutral tones (e.g., taupe/putty). I think the vanity is the big question mark at this point. I need to see which companies our contractor works with and if their designs speak to us.
Also trying to decide whether to build a medicine cabinet like pic 3 or just do mirrors (I have lots I've pinned). I like the design element of mirrors and I think we could get by without the medicine cabinet storage.
I can barely take a good before photo b/c it's such a small disjointed space (1971 in all its glory).
DH's make shift closet in the spare room (this is the wall we're moving back to enlarge the bathroom). new French doors will go around where the dresser in the foreground is, no more second entry into the bathroom either (it had 2 access doors to the master bath).
love your inspiration pics, this is going to be gorgeous.
about the porcelain tile that looks like marble--from what I read, you just have to be extra careful laying it out so that you don't have matching tiles near each other. there are fantastic porcelain options, but if the pattern repeats too much, you won't be happy with it.
my bathroom floor is ceramic (I think?) tile that looks like slate-like and I made them change several tiles that were too alike and too close before they grouted.

k3am, man I hope you brought like good bathroom reno karma to the board after your experience! Yours looks awesome (now!).
I might tile the whole back wall (which will have the new window, tub, and shower on it....I think it depends on how much space there is between the window and the shower. If there's not much or any space, then I think a wall of tile would look more uniform and less clunky.
One of the reasons we selected this contractor is he's done bathrooms and kitchens in 2 neighbor's houses and they said he's really flexible and good at 'making it right' and adapting on the fly.
We did the faux marble tile.. it is a lot easier to maintain... looks good and cheaper.
I wish we had done heated floors in the bathroom.
One thing I love is our shower is extra big.. it only has one shower but the space is huge (4x5') I felt claustrophobic in my old bathroom which was probably 36x36" .

I feel like this is the kitchen & bath holy grail. I couldn't find a satisfactory natural stone-look tile when we did our bath, but I wish you better luck!
On medicine cabinets, I agree with k3am. We did recessed mirrored medicine cabinets, and now that we have them I don't know where I'd put the stuff that's in them if we didn't. Even though our new bath has so much more functional space than our old bath did.
