Some of you were interested in following along with my plan to give away 100k. I am still behind on making anything official on it, but I have given away 20k.
One of my friends is very active in her church in one of the communities I want to support. I told her that I wanted to help her community and that I trust her ideas. She talked it over with her husband. They have a few kids in their lives who have had challenging upbringings and are currently in college, but may have to drop out if they can’t pay the tuition. So, we figured out a way to get money to those individuals and schools specifically without it being an official scholarship or having any hoopla around it (my original concern). I was also able to help the church a bit.
I am sure I will have more opportunities with her throughout the year, and will also look at some of the other ideas the board brought up!
Thank you for the update! Donating to individuals in this manner is a fantastic way to open up lifelong opportunities for those struggling to get by.
I find it interesting that you are forgoing all of the tax benefits of charitable giving. Many would not be willing to do that
Here are a few of my thoughts on the tax piece: - I am happy to pay taxes - they support our communities and vital services. - my goal is wealth redistribution. By giving money directly, each person I give to gets more.
I can't even begin to imagine how those students lives will change due to you. What an impact you made! How wonderful you are able to help them, along with the church and support a community that means something to you.
I haven't posted in a long time and mostly lurk, but wanted to let you know that I am so inspired by you. I have been working on my finances with the ultimate goal to be able to give as you are giving. Thank you!
I just thought of you because the local news featured a woman who has an eviction hearing on Tuesday. She paid one month's rent through a company called Money Gram. Her money somehow disappeared. They say they don't have it. Her bank doesn't have it. Her landlord doesn't have it. It sounds like she's being stonewalled by everyone and could end up on the street with her kids.
