Kitchen Ceiling Light?

More Grandma's condo fun!

I'm trying to finalize and order everything today.

She currently has this light in her kitchen:



Her kitchen layout/coloring is somewhat similar to the picture. All brushed nickel fixtures throughout. 

What in the world do I replace this with? I'll have a guy or 2 doing it all, including patching/painting, so we can put something else there but can't install can lights. It has to be something that uses spot where the current light is.

Ugh kitchen lighting is hard. With no pot lights, track lighting is the next best modernizing option.

Honestly I’d just update with a similar light. I don’t like the spottiness of the directional lights and don’t hate indoor fluorescent lights in a kitchen or laundry room. There are modern ones available that would probably be easy to swap out.

I landed here, too, once I really looked at my options. There is a vent near the light (cannot be changed since it's a condo building) so a rectangular light looks best. I'm going to go with this one:

 

It will at least be unobtrusive, I think.
