Does anyone have any experience creating a union in their work place? I would like to unionize the consultants and computer programmers at our company where we're currently getting shit on from all sides. The majority of our employees are in New York but we have some in California, Ohio and a couple other states. We've gone the manager and manager's manager route (asking for another 2 employees, a raise, share in sales bonus structure) but nothing has changed and in fact it's gotten worse over the past year. Or any other suggestions about what to do (besides looking for a new job lol)?
You need to contact established unions in the area. California has the Teamsters. I am management so I do not belong but most of our workforce and some of our contractors are in the Teamster Union and their rep and steward here are awesome. Just google "(State) Union" and it will pop up a bunch. I would love to see unions become the norm again.
The link above is spot on. I don't which state you're in, but if it was me, I'd reach out to the local AFL/CIO office to get the ball rolling.
I agree with @lemonlover . It would benefit us all if union density was raised nationwide.
Edit: FYI--Employers typically do not take kindly to union forming. Be prepared for some level of push-back, AND be sure your fellow coworkers are willing to stand up and stand firm. Sometimes people talk big, but they won't follow through.
