lived for 8 yrs without a vent, never died once.
currently our stove is on an interior wall, perpendicular to an outside wall. We have a vent that runs up to the ceiling, then across the tops of the cabinets to a vent cover on the outside wall. I like it for removing excess steam/smoke/smells while cooking. We built a dreaded soffit around the duct work so it didn't look so obvious.

You will need to check the building codes for your area. You may be able to get away without having a vent, but you also may need it, particularly if it is a high btu stove.
In our last house we did the same thing as PP where we ran the ductwork above the cabinets and then covered them over with crown moulding.
Ours is interior; on a peninsula actually. We are still in construction. We bought an island vent hood. Our contractor will be venting it up and between the rafters and out. The kitchen is in a corner of the house, so not going too far to vent out.
Ours vents through the ceiling/roof of our single story home.
Our house was built in the 70s, but had been remodeled before we moved in, (without a gas stove) and didn't have a real vent. The kitchen also made no sense to me so we changed the location of things, and it turned out that the original vent was located where I thought we should put the cooktop and worked out great for us.
At our old house the vent just recirculated and didn't vent outside. Even if it wasn't code here (which it is) I am more comfortable having it vent outside and can't imagine not finding a way to do it. Just because nothing happened to us at our old house, it doesn't mean that it was safe to not have it vent outside. Had we stayed in CA at our old house, we would have redone the kitchen and had a vent to the outside.
