We’re looking at replacing our bedroom windows and I’m looking into replacing our metal mini blinds with custom window shutters. I’m looking at either the poly blend or wood. If you’ve gotten them installed... Do they block light well? Do they open and close easily? Are they simple to clean or are they difficult? Approximately how much did you pay?

My daughter has them throughout her home. I love them, but they are so $$$$$$. I don't know any specifics about the care, but she loves hers. She has a big house and I think they paid about $3,000/$4000. for the whole house.

We have them in most of our windows in our new house. They block light reasonably well though not as well as our blackout curtain in the one room w/o blinds, they open up and close easily, they aren't too difficult to clean just a pain in the ass (have to wipe down each separate blind bit). We didn't pay for them as they were there already.
We had the poly ones installed in our old house. I think we paid either around $1200 or $1800 for 3 windows (1 probably about 3 ft, 2 slightly less). The poly are favored here over wood bc the heat and humidity cause the wood ones to warp.
Eta: they blocked light well enough for the dining room. They aren’t blackout, of course, but they wouldn’t bother me for sleeping.
We've installed them in two homes now. We love them. We went with the poly blend at both houses at the recommendation of the shutter people.
They block light well. You're not going to have blackout coniditions, but it's dim enough that we don't wake up because it's morning. They open and close VERY easily. They're easier to clean than blinds. You can also buy them with out a rod, which makes them even easier to clean. (We actually prefer having the rod.) For our first house, we only had them put on our front window that was a custom shape (arch), and it was pricey - ~$4k and worth every penny. For the new house, we installed them on 6 windows - most of them are oversized, and we ended up paying ~$5k for everything.

we are looking at shutters for a new property we are purchasing. H doesn't want the rod and I do - can you help me understand why you think having the rod is better?
larzhope, DH didn't care enough to justify the cost for going for the ones without the rod.
Personally it was a matter of cleaning for me, coupled with the fact that I didn't care enough one way or another to justify paying more for the invisible rod. I couldn't say one way or another if it's a legit concern, but in my mind, I would rather have hands just touching the rod vs touching anywhere they felt like on the levers.

This is actually a really great point and something I didn't think of prior.

Thanks everyone for the replies. This is super helpful as I really wanted a ballpark of what to expect. I know the price for this is going to be on the higher end as we have 7 floor to ceiling windows to cover. If we pull the trigger I will be sure to update on how it came out.
