rere- I’m amazed at some people. We live near a lake with a big park. It’s packed every time we drive by. People playing basketball, kids on the playground. Wtf. We are never going to get out of isolation at this rate.
And now I've grounded Ds from basically life. He wanted to go driving around. Fine. Don't stop anywhere. He walks up with a coke. Where did you get that? He says our local little store, because somehow that doesn't count as a place. Well its closed. So then he says I got mixed up, he went to a large, busy convenient store. For a coke.
So I have taken the phone, the xbox and he goes absolutely nowhere, not driving around. Plus I let him know I now consider him a liar and will treat him accordingly and that I will treat everything he says as a possible lie.
k3am, That is just... unconscionable. I cannot even wrap my head around them lying to you all and keeping schools open like that. When this is over, I'd be taking that as high as I could with complaints and fights. Wow.
rere, mommyatty, Our news was full of stories about how full all the trail heads and parking lots were this weekend. Our governor closed the beaches but not the state parks or trails, so everyone from all the surrounding states was flooding in to do the "allowed outdoor exercise" during the stay at home order. There's no way in hell that people were six feet apart from each other with how full the lots and streets were with cars. My parents are concerned about their area. It's mainly second homes and the grocery stores and healthcare system is very small and not able to handle the influx of people retreating to their vacation homes now that their first homes are "locked down."
Update: Online dance class is actually really nice. I need to stop complaining. No one can blame me for losing my mind during a global pandemic though.
Governor just extended my county's stay at home order to the end of April and schools are closed indefinitely. I sent DH out for groceries yesterday and he couldn't find butter or peanut butter. He has to go back out again today to find those plus get diapers for DS2. My work VPN connection sucks. I'm lucky if I can get connected within the first 10 tries every morning.
The owners of our company have a meeting with the Governor today to discuss our business. I have no idea how or why they are getting an actual meeting but we do a lot of work for the state. Our owners believe he will eventually shut us down so now we're putting plans in place for how long we can float payroll when that happens. The influential business owners in our region believe we will be closed 2-3 more months based on their conversations with the Gov. My department will still have to work somewhat during that time to keep the business running. Some of our people in the field are starting to quit because they don't feel safe working onsite.
I go back and forth between save all the money/cut costs/budget vs. keep acting like everything is normal on the daily.
DOE just announced that the return to school is unlikely and that districts need to plan on distance learning instead of making up the time over the summer and need distance learning in place by 4/13.
We got another email blog from the principle saying food pantry bags will be available on Thursday, listing the grab and go lunch sites, who to call within the district if you need help with housing/bill paying, and that teachers will be calling sometime this week for a check in. Nothing on actual school stuff.

Hearing rumblings that the governor (MI) may announce this week that schools will be closed through the end of the current school year. Our superintendent sent out a survey today about access to internet and a computer. (Students are given school-issued devices, so everyone should have a chromebook.) I'm near feeling despondent over this. I think it's too quick to cancel the rest of the year. It should be reviewed on a week-by-week basis, and there should be no penalties for any students or staff who don't feel comfortable/safe returning. (Obviously, they would need to send a survey to staff first to ensure enough staff even felt comfortable/safe returning.) I just don't know if I can mentally handle the whole rest of the school year being canceled, with 2 months of the school year left to go.
covergirl82, I feel the same way (too early to call it), but we have almost 3 months left in the school year here. Up until yesterday, our district was still saying they hoped to return after spring break on 4/13. But I think Trump's change to end of April meant they had to announce something, so now they're saying "closed until further notice."
Schools can't operate on a week-by-week basis. Teachers need to have childcare lined up for their kids and we know how tough that is to come my right now. I'm reasonably certain we aren't going back to school this year and schools would be smart to put in distance learning protocols now in the event that this all runs into next year as well.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Texas schools are now closed through May 5. We end around the end of May, so I just don’t see us going back until Fall. I’m hoping they offer some sort of bridge program for a few weeks this summer.
We’re starting up distance learning when we go back after Easter, even if it’s only for a couple weeks.
My personal opinion is that we’ll definitely be back by the fall. I think the disruption will be major enough by then that people will be willing to take their chances on getting the virus.
erbear don’t you think childcare will follow schools and re-open if that happens, so childcare wouldn’t be an issue for teachers?
The trampoline arrived today and DH put it together this afternoon. Within two hours of getting it, I had to make a rule that the kids have to wear underwear at a minimum to use it 🤦♀️

I don't know. No one knows how long this is going to take to safely return to germ factories (aka schools). I'm just saying there is talk in our world that we are distance learning practicing now in the event that we have to do this for real in the fall.

If we aren't looking at going back to traditional school in the fall I'm seriously considering enrolling DD in the virtual online school that I looked at last summer. At least those people know how to do online school successfully.
Today was a very bad day for DD and me. The honeymoon period of being at work with mom is over. I tried to get DD to shower when we got home so I could have 20 minutes of alone time and she rebelled so I got dinner in the oven and I took a shower and had a messy cry. Then had to eat alone in the bedroom because the thought of being in a room with other people made me cry more. I think DH nows I need alone time as he is hiding out in the garage tonight.
erbear I’m surprised that there isn’t more research on whether kids are actually spreading it to their parents and grandparents. Everything I can find is theoretical and based on the flu and other infections that kids suffer and die from at much higher rates. Every article/expert I’ve read says kids ‘could be’ or are ‘likely to’ spread coronavirus, but no one knows for sure..
sdlaura, we are in WI. The Gov thanked us, we are essential to keeping a large workforce employed for the state so we will continue for at least the next two weeks. We employ large unions which is his election base. What he doesn't understand is that we can't keep going if the employees refuse to show up for work and can now get paid unemployment for more than they're currently making. Also, we are at risk for lawsuits if any of them get sick and spread it. Our ownership is worried and doesn't feel it's a safe situation for them but we have no choice but to keep on keeping on.

Ok today my DD had her 2nd zoom meeting and OMG DH left it on me at the last second right after I got out of a shower. I was dressed but my hair was wet and I looked like who did it and what for. The dance I did to avoid the camera!!
Even though we are essential, people are starting to get pulled over on the way to work/their worksite. A guy in a company truck got a ticket. I'm confident we can get it taken care of but we're focusing on reducing people on the road so we don't have lots of tickets and lots of police interactions that can be avoided....

mustardseed2007, that is crazy! LEO's here put out a statement that they wouldn't be issuing tickets anyway, just educating people. They have better things to do with their time.

The chief of police and head of the Sheriff's office here also said the same thing, but this was in an unincorporated suburb...I don't know if that's why? But I've checked, their rules are not different and they don't have a city of XYZ letter either.
Our head of HR was pulled over on her way to the office in the main part of the city on Monday and they asked where she was going, but she showed them her letter and her business card and they let her go. When a company truck is pulled over, I'm very surprised.
mellym interesting to know. My firm works with a lot of unions on the investment side, advising their retirement and health and welfare funds. We work with several large ones in Ohio, but I don't think in Wisconsin.
We are a clearly essential industry. We are transportation/supply chain. We were a little worried employees would refuse to show up to work, but we are seeing better availability than in normal times. I think a lot of people are just feeling really fortunate to have jobs. And our people feel an amazing sense of duty to get stuff where it needs to be across the country. But then again, our union jobs pay really well, so there’s that dynamic too.

Since I can't tell anyone IRL, DH's boss (VP-level) just told DH in confidence that directors and above (DH is a director) may have their pay impacted somehow to help off-set financial losses. DH works for the health system I used to, so they've been losing money daily due to all non-urgent appointments and procedures being cancelled (and our area hasn't been hit hard (yet?) with CV). I guess it's good we have a decent e-fund balance and aren't spending a ton of extra money right now, and I got a decent pay increase with my job change in February.
covergirl82 it's also good that you don't still work for the same company! I can commiserate - 2/3 of my DH's pay is gone because bonuses were cut, and we're just hoping he keeps his job and base salary. We are also lucky that my income is good and hopefully stable, and we have good savings.
My neighbor is a teacher at DD1's school and was telling me tonight that the district is working on content and workbooks for K-2. She has the impression they aren't going back to school this year and hopes it will be back in session for FALL. Her family is planning on all spring and summer activities being cancelled. My head can't go there yet.
She also let me know a girl's dad from her classroom tested positive and is in a medically induced coma in the hospital right down the street from us. He's 35 years old and no risk factors. It's hitting close to home now. I'm hugging my family a little closer tonight.
I find myself getting annoyed that a lot of people have gone from being overly relaxed about social distancing/shelter in place to overly uptight.
There’s currently a debate on our nextdoor about whether it’s ok to go for a run in your neighborhood (keeping distance from others) and on the MM Moms board about whether stopping at a distance to talk to a neighbor is ok.
Sure, it would be safest if we all locked ourselves in our homes and never came out, but I think this thing is likely to last for months, so I think it’s healthy to have some level of distanced social interaction.
