We were all set to pull the trigger on a rather expensive landscaping project in our backyard (about $4K) to install two new flower beds, put in a french drain, and plant a bunch of stuff.
Now my husband is furloughed for 8 weeks and I'm on a mandatory shortened work week (thanks COVID-19) so we're watching our budget - and honestly my husband has a lot of time now. We want to try and tackle the project on our own but I seriously have NO IDEA what plants to plan in these beds. One gets a TON of sun, one is almost entirely in the shade, and also we're in Florida (Zone 9ish) and I grew up in the midwest so I'm clueless.
Would love to pay a small fee for someone to tell us what to plant. Does this exist? Please say yes.
I don't know about that, but most garden centers will create a plan for a small fee. They will often give you a credit for the cost to put toward plants you buy from them.

This! Our local garden center does this. It’s $50-75 and can be used towards the plants.
My friend who is a landscape architect not currently working for a firm is doing virtual consultations exactly like you describe for a small fee right now. She’s in a way different climate though. Maybe ask around and see if anyone knows someone. You could offer to pay an hourly consulting rate. It would probably be around $100-200 depending on how much time you need. If you really only need specific plant advice, a knowledgeable nursery worker could also help.

How do I understand you ! Shortly before the outbreak of the pandemic, we also planned to start doing our garden. But the pandemic has significantly cut our budget. Before the pandemic, we even contacted with www.walshlandscaping.co.uk/services/landscape-gardeners-maidenhead-marlow/ and they gave us a good discount when we explained why we were going to postpone the start of work in our garden. They did everything perfectly and the cost of their services is quite small. They also give advice and make projects to order. I think you should contact them.
