So we have done it both ways, and it really depends on what you'd do if something got damaged. Usually without liability is limited to 35 cents a pound or something like that. The time we had full value protection, it turned out to be worth it, but we also would have been fine without it.
We've never done a move without something getting damaged. Last time it was my son's crib and we fixed it with white duct tape. The time before that was a set of bowflex weights that were worth $300 and the moving company paid to get them repaired (not replaced) under the full value protection clause. We downsized significantly between two moves ago and the last move, so we felt comfortable going without coverage since we had less stuff.

I think it depends on what you have. The only time my mother ever used full service movers, who packed for her, they did a shit job. She had a few very valuable vases broken and got basically nothing for them (they were very delicate glass and were paid out per pound). If I were to ever use full service movers I would absolutely pay for more comprehensive insurance knowing that.
When we moved long distance recently, our belongings were going to be in storage with our movers for several months as well. The insurance included in the move was hardly anything. When I asked my insurance agent about it, he said everything would be covered under our renter's policy. (We rented back from the new owner for a bit which is why we had renter's insurance and not homeowners). You might want to talk to your agent about it before you decide.
Another vote for it depends on what you have. When we moved, if we had to replace anything they broke, we had nothing that would devastate us. In a few cases, if they broke something, we could replace with what we wanted without guilt. We had a short move (10 miles), they packed for us, and we didn’t have a single thing break. Not even one single mismatched wine glass. If we’d had something valuable or meaningful, I’m sure it would have done for.
Okay thanks. I’m leaning towards getting it. We contacted our insurance company and it doesn’t cover damage from moving. We have a lot of pricey furniture including several things with glass pieces, Samsung frame TVs, a lot of ceramic kitchen stuff, etc. if they were packing I might not get it but we are packing ourselves so their basic coverage doesn’t cover breakage.
I had it when I moved as the moving company only offered so much per lb and it would not have come close to replacing the stuff that I had that was of value. The other thing you need to consider is that if there is a fire or the entire truck is destroyed, it's not just a piece or 2 of furniture but all of your belongings.
BTW....when I checked, my renter's policy did not cover moving so you might want to double check with your rental policy if you rent.
