If I was planning to head down next summer as a surprise for my kids right after school ended, so June of 2021- when should I think about booking if I want to go through DVC? Is June insanely hot/humid or is it slightly better than July/August? Do you think things will be up and running by then?
I need something to plan, even hypothetically, to get me through this.
Are you talking about renting points? I'd honestly avoid giving a penny to any of the agencies until we see if they make it thru this. There is a 100+ page thread on disboards about David's and their policies.

For DVC you can book starting 11 months out. I live in Texas so our summers are much like Florida I would definitely pick June over July or August. August is horrible with heat and humidity

I hundred percent agree with that I would be very cautious of booking through a rental agency renting points because of possibly not getting your money back. At least with Disney you can either get a full refund back or you have the ability to move your dates without penalty
Also, I should note that even if David's survives this, seeing the way this has been handled and now understanding that he deletes all negative reviews from his Facebook page, I will never give them any of my money.

I honestly hadn’t even considered this angle! Thank you.
TamiTaylor when can you start book straight through Disney for next year?

No problem. It sucks because points have typically delivered more room/space/benefits for the money, but I just can't imagine having spent all that money and right now facing the prospect of not getting it back.

Yeah we rented DVC the last time we went and it was so smooth I thought we would do it every time, but the thought they might not even be in business anymore after this never even struck me. It’s like a truly believed anything Disney was untouchable. I don’t know why.

Well this isn't Disney per-se, but someone acting as a middleman, and the issue is they have no real assets and appear to not have adequate cash flow to provide refunds. With David's, they're providing vouchers but if they go out of business before people have a chance to use the vouchers, they're still out of luck because Disney has no obligation. And from what I can tell, many of the owners have wanted to work directly with their renters, but David's has been making that difficult in order to preserve aspects of their fee. I may not have all the nuance of that correct, but I think it comes from a business based on actually having no physical assets to draw on and poor financial practices.

You can book a room only reservation 499 days in advance. Packages for next year are normally released in early June. However that may change this year.

I mean I fully admit my bias due to being a TA but I would be very hesitant about booking through any 3rd party booking system vs booking directly through Disney. For me that would include DVC rental companies, Expedia, AAA, Costco, etc. FTR, I have used a DVC rental company prior to becoming a TA so I feel can speak to the experience on both sides.

We booked DL through Costco last year and you leave the site and book via a Disney link, so while I typically agree with not using third-parties, personally I feel booking via Costco in this case is different than with AA, Expedia, etc.

How do you book now for May 2021? I just tried to book room only and the calendar wouldn’t go past 12/2020.

As someone currently dealing with a David’s reservation (or not, because all I can get is a canned email response right now) NEVER AGAIN. It worked so well for us in the past, and while I feel for the tough situation David is in, I do not like the way he is handling this at all. I would love for the opportunity to try and reschedule with the owners but he is not allowing that.

That is awful. And what sucks is from reading that thread on Disboards, a lot of the owners want to work with the renters and David's is not allowing it on their end either. I could see if the renter wanted the info and they were hesitant to provide it, but if the owner is the one asking and they still won't provide it, that is even more sketchy.
I absolutely wouldn’t book through a third party until things are up and running again. I have been so shocked by how David’s has handled this whole thing. I know this was unprecedented but he is running terrible business. When we’ve rented our points we use dvc rental store. Right now they’re offering credit to anyone with canceled reservations who didn’t get a refund.
