Head’s up- I received an email from Amex that May 1-July 31, 6x points at us supermarkets. Pretty sweet deal. (I have the bonvoy card.) THEN the points guy posted that Chase Saph Reserve is doing 5x points on groceries. So isn’t that actually the better deal, bc the CSR points are worth 1.5 when redeemed for travel? Does that make sense? I’m only halfway through my coffee but pretty sure we’re spending $10K on groceries per month so I want to maximize my points. it feels like it anyway.
I also want someone to tell me which is the better of these two, lol. But yeah, I'm thinking that CSR is better as long as you plan to redeem for travel. Otherwise Amex would be better.
Sweet, thank you! I hadn’t seen either deal yet. I usually use my Freedom Unlimited at grocery stores because it’s easy to remember.
I know sapphire reserve would be a better deal but we are also spending a ton on groceries and I really like Bonvoy points. We get a lot of use out of those.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
It looks like you can use your Chase card at Target too and have it count as a grocery purchase because they have grocery aisles. I wonder if Costco is included.
I’m definitely going to skip the liquor store today and just buy beer and tequila at the grocery store.
Update on the Chase Reserve- now they are letting you use the 1.5x redemption for restaurants, grocery stores, and home improvement (Until 9/30). Also, the $300 annual travel credit can be used for gas and grocery stores. Finally, starting July 1, the annual fee renewal will drop back down to $450 until EOY.
Costco is coming up as "shopping" not groceries which is disappointing. I'm going to reach out and see if they'll offer an adjustment. fx bc I have some hefty Costco bills due to the wine I'm needing to guzzle while SIP
Chase Reserve is now doing 5% on gas and 10% on streaming services until Sept 30.
I am bummed about these, I think they are kind of crappy categories.
I have spent about $30 on gas since early March, and even with 5 different streaming services (some of which I should cancel, haha), only $28 of that is billed monthly. So that adds up to around $3 a month in perks.
I know some people are back to driving more again, but I still would imagine most users are driving less than usual so the gas perk is not great timing.

For any CSR (or Chase in general) fans, they just released a new no-fee card, the Freedom Flex. It has revolving 5x point categories, currently gas and hardware stores. I mainly signed up for the sign on bonus which ends up being $300 if they're transfer to the CSR.
