About 18 months ago, we bought built in bookshelves from someone who was tearing them out of their house. Now we are finally getting around to putting them into our office. Here’s the photo from Marketplace.
The plan is to paint them white and install a library ladder eventually. Of course, DH had to sound proof the back wall before putting them in. This involved moving a vent and a bunch of drywall repair on the wall in the adjacent room. We’re also going to end up with a new solid door, since the hollow door we currently have doesn’t block enough sound 🙄.
Here they are, partially assembled. DH will have to add more wood to the sides to make fill the gaps a bit, and eventually we’ll put up crown molding and paint all the wood colored trim.
I am toying with the idea of staining the top of the bottom half of the shelves, like this:
But we have so many woods in that room. Should I try to match the floor (which has varying shades) or the desk (which is mahogany)? Or should I just paint it all white? I’m leaning toward trying to match one of the darker colors in the floor.
Also, it needs wood shelves up top, right? The glass ones seem dated to me, and we have TONS of books, so I’m a bit worried about weight.

I would not stain mahogany to match furniture. Furniture may change but the floors will generally always be there.
Love it though. I wish I could do something like this but it’s not in my near future until we maybe refinish the basement. To be honest though we have purged so many books I don’t know what we would put in there. DH and I are committed Kobo users.
