MM to the extent that I guess it'll save us $$ after COVID if it works. :-) We just ordered the clippers, and I'm watching barbershop videos on YouTube. My husband is black so his hair has a very tight curl and he keeps it very short -- IDK if that will make it easier or harder, but hoping it'll make it harder notice if I mess up. Trying to figure out where the "sides" stop and the "top" starts. Anyway, share tips if you got 'em.

I did last night and it turned out really well. I watched three YouTube videos on the fade and “high and tight” and it turned out well. Dh is Hispanic and has wavy, “poofy”, coarse hair that is thinning. I’d never used clippers before and did a longer guide than I thought he wanted at first on the bottom to figure it out. Then I went back over with the shorter guide at the right length.
Tips from all the YouTube videos. Don’t curve with the shape of the head. Clip up and out unless you’re going for a buzz cut.
Don’t go shorter than a 3 guide if you don’t want a shaved head look.
If you’re using scissors on the top, get real hair cutting scissors and cut longer than you think you want. You can always go shorter. Also make the first cut and use that as a guide for the length from piece to piece.
My tip - watch lots of YouTube videos for the cut you’re trying to do. You should be able to find a lot so take all the tips and tricks from all of them.
Watch some YouTube videos on the kind of cut you want to do.
I’ve always cut my boys’ hair though, so I’ve already endured the learning curve. The hardest part was figuring out the side/top location. For the shape of my boys’ heads, at least, I just take the clippers straight up the side of their head. Then i go one level up on the clippers and do another half inch or so blend.
Start longer and go shorter if you want.
Don’t let them watch the process in the mirror. Lol 😂
Yes, I’ve done it twice ever now, with clippers we ordered. He made me watch several videos on how to do a fade. You need to blend the line between the layers, which takes some finesse - I think I did that better the second time. With more practice, hopefully I’ll do even better. 😅 TBD whether I’ve got the job permanently though, haha.
I liked it more than I thought I would. Cutting hair is kind of satisfying and we were cracking up the whole time.

Nope. In February he’s swearing he’d never let me touch his hair. In April he openly laughed at my attempts to cut the kids’ hair. In May he orders clippers due to arrive end of month and expects a haircut. Not gonna happen. He can live with his awesome Jew fro.
Yup! H has super straight hair that grows straight out, so he gets his hair cut every 3-4 weeks and it drives him crazy longer. I tried cutting his hair years ago to save money and it was a disaster. Too stressful for me! Luckily we still had the clippers so I've cut it twice so far and amazingly, it has come out great! I think the pressure is off because if it looks terrible it doesn't really matter since he's not going anywhere (and everyone looks awful on zoom). It's actually kind of fun! He knew the clipper guide sizes to use and I followed the contours of his previous haircut. Our clippers also came with a guide that helped. I found it easier to cut it all using the longest setting first and then go back and do the bottom/sides with the shorter setting. It was hard to cut with the shortest setting when the hair was really long. Good luck!
I just did it this weekend. H trained me by telling me how the stylist does it.
@@ He also showed me first by cutting DS's hair./@@
I think it came out pretty well! It did take me way longer than the pros take, and I also had the blending issue on the line where I switched guards (lengths) for the clippers, so I had to clean that up with scissors. But overall it was NBD.

I've cut my dh's hair twice. I've been using our dogs' grooming clippers which is a little scary but so far it's looked totally decent. I agree with whoever said the pressure is off for it to be perfect so a great time to learn. After the first cut dh said he's had at least 5 cuts that were worse. I'll take it!
I used to cut DH's hair sometimes - it was fairly easy as he just had the same length all over so no fading. He was black with tight curly hair and I found his hair was easier to cut that my boys' hair as theirs is mixed and seems to have different textures in different places!
I've been cutting H's hair for the past 15 years, so he's feeling all smug right now because he looks exactly like normal on all his work calls, ha. I do it with clippers. I do his at a #3 all over and then a #2 up the sides and fade about about temple height. He's white but has curly hair. With curls you have to go in different directions to catch all the hairs regardless of the direction they're curling. Try doing all over at a longer length than you think you want and you can work from there.
The scary thing I did this weekend was cut my own hair -- I have a pixie cut. My last cut was 1/30, so I was waaaay overdue. I was supposed to get a cut in March about 2 days after lockdown started. 2 months after THAT I just couldn't take it anymore. It came out surprisingly well, just took me forever. I did it in the bathroom where we have mirrored medicine cabinet doors that open in opposite directions, allowing me to be able to see the back. It's out of my face again and I am not embarrassed of my work!
H is doing his own. He fvcked up and used a 2" clipper blade the first time, so next time, he will know better. My pixie cut is the real issue. High risk household and I have no interest in going to a salon...except when I look in the mirror. Ok, Susie, you are a brave soul. Maybe I should practice on Mr. Pom.
I used to do DH’s hair eons ago when we were poor college kids.
I did both boys a couple weeks ago. They look fine. The little one 22m was squirmy so I’m just glad I didn’t stab him. I need to cut DH’s this week.
I have a pixie cut and DH trimmed my hair a few weeks back and nicked my ear with the clippers. Otherwise it looked fine. I do need another neck/sides trim. I’m honestly thinking about growing out my cut so I don’t have to deal with this if we have to go in-and-out of shelter-in-place orders for the foreseeable future.

I have been cutting DH's hair and both of my sons' hair. DH and younger one are easy. They like a buzz cut. My teen has that stupid teen boy cut that is buzzed on the sides with a flap of hair over the top that they all constantly play with. My stylist sent me instructions on how to do his. It turned out fine.

OMG, thank goodness my son likes his hair "big" because there is no WAY I am going near that. He has a super tight curl in the front/top and then loose waves at the back. God only knows what I would do to it. For my husband, he says he does a longer one on top than on sides...would you start the sides at about his temples and then try to blend a little? Can you do halves? (e.g. 3 on top, 2 on sides, 2.5 to blend?) Clippers won't be here for a week.
Fortunately, my husband and our dog have the same hair. About 6 years ago, we bought clippers and grooming shears, and started grooming our pup ourselves because he became fearful of the groomer.
My husband said that it’s one of the best cuts he’s had. I used all of our dog’s clippers/scissors. It’s like trimming the dog’s topknot. I can’t foresee him going back to a barber.
MH has always cut his own hair so he feels like he is winning in all this. He jokes that he’s been training for this his whole adult life.
My hair is curly and long-ish; I was due for a cut in March so it’s not awful but it could use a trim to look healthier. Half the time it’s pulled back anyway. The real question for me is do I feel going with my grombre or break down and dye it. I tried purple underneath from ov.er.tone and bc my hair is black it didn’t make a difference. And ironically there’s not much grey under so I couldn’t tell if it would take there.
@@@ BB has long hair too that is both straight and then curls at the end (I have hair envy with my own kid). She’s only had a trim once which MH did and BB had no idea Bc she was watching a video 😂

I vote grombre! Great time to do it.
I am trying to work up the nerve to cut my own. It's fairly long and curly so should be pretty forgiving. I don't have a good setup for a mirror for the back, though (in a non-carpeted area at least). I watched some YouTube videos but haven't gotten brave enough yet.
Anybody do a long cut on themselves with success? H would do it but I kind of want to try... The last time he cut mine it was kind of a disaster (but we were attempting bangs, which are hard! Do not recommend).

That's really good to know, I've been tempted by the purple in those Facebook ads! I always did drug store hair color anyway so that's not an issue for me.

I left it on for 15 minutes and nothing. Maybe I can try longer and see but I think it’s not gonna happen.
Since I got word yday that I’m to wfh until further notice, maybe I will be bold and go all over.

Susie and Pom I'm so in your boat! My hair is so so awful, especially when I have to wear a mask at work. I think I might shave my head once I get up the nerve. My stylist is on board and has promised me that it'll be back to my usual pixie length in 3-4 months once it starts growing out again and that we can do some fun styles along the way if I want to keep some of it super short. He was like "You can rock it, and from personal experience it's fun! There probably won't be a better time! Just make sure you text me pictures!" 😬😂😬

I literally just opened a package with barber scissors. I was thinking of trying that but maybe I will just use the bigger clippers on my head too. Let me know how it goes if you decide to shave! Eeeekk.
Following, DH won’t let me near his but @ds’s is getting obnoxious long since he tends to use his hair as a napkin ::smh::
I did do mine which turned out not perfect but fine. I have long and mostly straight hair so I used the split pony under my chin method and then split it into sections to point cut to clean it up. A few pieces stick out to me looking at the back in a mirror but better than the crazy split ends I had before, and since I wear a ponytail daily I’m the only one who will notice. I think for long straight (not layered, though he addressed layering after the initial cut) hair Brad Mondo had the best video, but he had straightening your hair as a step and (minor) confession time: I don’t own one.
dr.girlfriend that’s so pretty!! I would love to have that but there is no way I could DIY that.
I did also buy a extreme blue but haven’t tried it. They’re both sample sizes since I kind of figured that wouldn’t really work but it would be fun to give it a go.
