It’ll be interesting to see what happens with phase 3. Even each phase here seems to have multiple phases — so a county could be easing into phase 3 and still not allow ALL phase 3 activities.
For example, 47 counties are now allowing haircuts (which are in phase 3) but 11 counties are not. And none of the counties in the state are allowing leisure travel, which is also under phase 3 (though one Tahoe-area county is petitioning to get leisure travel approved as soon as next month.)
It’s definitely a patchwork here. I’m not saying it CAN’T happen in Orange County next month, but the juxtaposition of those two quotes in the article is misleading. Newsom wasn’t explicitly talking about theme parks in that press conference. He was mentioning “early” Phase 3 activities like personal care (which is what we got.)

Disney will definitely be concerned about the optics and public opinion so they won't open before Newsom gives the go ahead, but this is certainly not being enforced. Half my street (in Orange County CA) travelled Memorial Day Weekend and I know for a fact several of the luxury hotels in Laguna Beach have been open for weeks now.
I just am so frustrated in this whole thing. The media says the border to Mexico is closed and then my neighbor has been going willy nilly to their river house in MX each weekend. It's like the whole thing is a joke.

It’s being enforced up here for sure, especially in the counties around Lake Tahoe and the Route 1 beach towns. And hotels have been allowed to stay open — but they’re supposed to warn you that you can only book for “essential” travel, like the need to self-isolate or if you’re traveling for an essential job (nurse, journalist, etc.) At any rate, it’s much easier to stay under the radar if you book an AirBNB. You’re also allowed to go to a second home that you own. A mega-resort like Disney isn’t going to break the law.
Also, your reports of what’s happening in SoCal make my blood boil. With the exception of one or two counties up here, the hardest hit places in the state are all down there. We’re doing our part up here — come on, SoCal, work with us!

San Francisco just announced that hotels aren’t on the roadmap for us until mid-August. Obviously we’re a far cry from Orange County (geographically and figuratively) but it just goes to show how the articles can be a bit misleading unless you understand the nuance of what’s going on here.
mmmomof2 What I’m hearing from people who are crossing or know people crossing to Mexico from CA regularly is that you can get across but sometimes it’s taking a short amount of time and other times it’s taking many hours. There’s so many people who live there and work in SD. I’m sure a lot of people are not working or working remotely.
I’m not surprised at all. Newsom keeps saying we’ll have to walk back our reopening plans if cases keep going up. Orange County hasn’t been the hardest hit per capita but they’re definitely up there in terms of absolute number of cases.
The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and Legoland all open this weekend. Our cases are still steadily rising but we are no where near OC and LA.
We’re thinking of going to the San Diego Zoo on Monday. It’s entirely outdoors and you don’t have to touch anything (like roller coaster handlebars). Hopefully people won’t crowd around places like the hippo pool if something interesting is going on.
We’ve been really cautious about going out in public so far, but I feel like this is a situation where we can manage the risks. They aren’t allowing the bus or ariel tram, requiring masks and non-household members have to stand 6 feet apart. Fingers crossed this is enforced.

We are pass holders. We haven’t been yet but I agree it seems safe. We are thinking of going at the end of next week. Hoping that with many fireworks displays and celebrations canceled it won’t be too crazy

The other thing to mention is that the state controls which county gets to reopen what. Newsom has been pretty reasonable (IMO) about letting rural/red counties go more quickly than the major urban ones but he has no love for the OC right now (where the sheriff has said he won’t enforce our statewide mask mandate):
I’m expecting a lawsuit soon from Disney. I don’t see why their business is singled out, but not other travel destinations (Yosemite, ski resorts, Napa) or even zoos/aquariums. Sure they will have to limit capacity and socially distance the crowds, but that’s being done in every Disney park in the world right now. There’s not much difference between walking around a mall or eating in a restaurant and going to a theme park.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Anaheim and Santa Ana have the highest COVID numbers. Schools still aren’t open in those cities because of their numbers. If you open up Disneyland and other local theme parks it’s only going to get worse.
I am an annual passholder and miss going to the parks but until they get the school situation and numbers under control then I don’t see it happening anytime soon.
