Pardon my french, but that's horsesh!t. I see their side that you weren't working, but it's not like you said "hey I don't want to work, please pay me anyway". I guess they think you're backdating the PTO to cover the time you were paid but not working, but what about people who have lives and sh!t to do for the next 6 months? Like besides a trip or something. Ugh I'm sorry but I'm mad for you.
Not that I agree with it, but I wonder if it's a productivity thing? If they already lost 10+ weeks of work being done for the year, they may just not want people away from the office the rest of the year.
I think they are going to have to make exceptions for things like being sick, having surgery, caring for family, etc, though. It's not really reasonable to expect that nobody is going to have a good reason to be out in the next 7 months.
It’s a cash flow thing, although you’ll rarely get Finance or whoever to admit it. PTO/vacation/sick is set aside as a payable benefit, depending on state laws and company policies. It’s basically money the company’s already spent, so if you use your PTO that’s cash saved out of payroll.

Our company is not doing that, but furloughed people were not paid. People who are still working are obviously not getting their PTO taken (so weird that any company would consider that when people were working. I'm not sure that is legal).
We actually get sick and vacation vs. PTO, and people who were furloughed were not allowed to take any of that time, but they are still accruing that time. Also people who are working can take sick but not vacation, and but we are still accruing.

This is solely the American code that the needs of big business must always supersede the needs of employees.
(My company gives us unlimited time off and no one’s mentioned capping it. In fact, we gave caregivers a separate bank of paid leave. Forward-looking companies can still make money.)

A lot of essential professsions require you choose and lock in vaca a year in advance (it blows)...assuming your area is still hard hit when you hit your time off will they let you take it and pay OT so they're still fully staffed? FWP but it sucks for families who won't be able to travel either, we don't want to use our time (if we even can) just to stay home. Maybe some people will save on summer daycare or use it as a mental health break, but I assume a lot of folks would want the chance to move it if they can.

This is my sister who is a doctor and now she can’t leave the state for TBD months. Her vacation week was this werk and we were supposed to be at the beach. Super sucks Bc I won’t see her for a while (I live in the state next door) and she won’t get another vacation week

I was worried about this for my work. We don't set PTO that far out but we do have minimum staffing levels. "Luckily" everyone has been using PTO to cover various things in our personal lives, or to just take mental health days, during the shutdown so we aren't going to all have 3 weeks left in Dec and be unable to take it.
