We are in desperate need of a new mattress, and we’re trying to figure out the best way to go about purchasing one right now. We have had 2 Simmons beauty rest mattresses and both of them have left intense impressions on my husband’s side of the mattress after a few years. So we don’t want another one of those. We’ve looked at Casper and Avocado mattresses online and both get good reviews. I feel nervous ordering one without laying on it first, especially because we were going to finally upgrade to a king bed but that also means getting a new headboard/frame and bedding as well. So it’s a pretty big investment.
Has anyone ordered one without laying on it first and how did that go? Or does anyone have any recommendations? FWIW, we are looking for something that isn’t too firm or too soft, and comfort/longevity are much more important than the price.
I haven’t ordered any of the mail-order mattresses, but I’m pretty sure most of them come with robust guarantees and refunds if you don’t like it. Some even donate the mattress you tried to shelters? (I think maybe Leesa?)
Honestly even laying on them in stores isn’t a good indicator of how they will sleep. I would figure out what you want most in a mattress (temp control, support, good for side sleepers, whatever) and then look for mattresses with those features that have a good guarantee.
We have a Brooklyn mattress and really like it (it’s a latex hybrid) but I know they have changed their offerings since we got it. Sleeplikethedead.com has unbiased mattress reviews, best source I found when we were shopping.
I did! I bought a King sized Spa Sensations by Zinus (Memory Foam) last summer. It was only $300. I also bought a frame/headboard for $250.
I had always wanted to try a memory foam anyway and I figured even if it only lasted a year or 2 it was worth the gamble. My old mattress was awful and hurt my back. I went with an 12" deep one and I absolutely love it. I read reviews (4.5 stars in 6k reviews) and asked around from friends I knew had one. I also researched the brand and it came with a warranty. Some companies will even allow you to try it out for a while and return it if you're unhappy.
My only advice from personal experience. Don't get a King Coil. They are terrible.
We've had a Zinus (14", King, I don't remember the exact model) for several years- we still love it and it's held up great. It's firmer than I expected it to be, but, very comfortable. I do remember, that at least- at the time- it was less expensive to order it on the Zinus website than Amazon, so check both (and for coupon codes).
We bought a mail order mattress. Like PP said, most companies have great return policies. Our one requirement was that we wouldn’t buy from a company that trashes returned mattresses - some companies will allow you to donate instead of returning, and that was important to us. We got a Purple 3 and it made my back hurt, so we requested a return and they sent someone to pick it up. Then we ordered a Ghostbed. It sleeps a little warm but otherwise we like it.
When we were shopping, we were looking at Casper and read a lot of reviews from people who had problems shortly after the warranty was ended.

We have bought 2 Layla mattresses (one queen, then loved it so much we got another when we upgraded to a king). Unlike most of the mail order memory foam mattresses, the Layla is 2-sided, with different firmness levels on each side. I liked that feature, because it's hard to gauge your preferred firmness without laying on it, and I wanted to avoid having to return a mattress.
Also, these are copper-infused or some shit like that so it doesn't get super hot.
We got a Tuft and Needle at Lowe's the other day because their refunds are so easy. It's so firm I'm having trouble falling asleep, and when I attempt to roll out of bed at night for Tums the edge of the mattress collapses. So don't get the plain Tuft and Needle since you don't want firm. While I was at Costco grabbing a mattress pad to make this thing liveable until my husband caves and buys the damn mattress I wanted in the first place, I saw they have Casper mattresses in the warehouse, so that might be an option for you. At least with the T+N, if we decide not to keep it we donate it, then bring the donation receipt to Lowe's for our refund. Casper is likely similar with Costco.
We also got the T&N regular mattress and also found it to be too firm. However, then we purchased the T&N topper and it made all the difference. Our bed is so comfortable now. Their topper is not cheap (I think it was $150-$200) but it is very nice. I am thinking of doing the same setup for our guest room so that if we have a guest who prefers a former mattress, we can simply remove the topper.
We just got a purple 3 mattress without laying on it. About a month ago. It has such great guarantees and a 100 day sleep trial, so we felt pretty safe taking the “risk.” My H sleeps hot, so we needed something that helps with that. This one has been great.
We just ordered a Tuft & Needle Mint mattress. It's the middle one (cost wise). I have 2 friends who have the basic Tuft and Needle and both of them rave about it. We are downgrading to a queen from king, so I'm a little nervous. But, we used to have a full (!) and my parents gave us their king mattress about 8-9 years ago (which was less than 2 years old, at the time). Our bedroom is so small, the king bed takes up so much of the room. I think the queen will be perfect for us.
We bought a Casper without lying on it and kept our old bed in the garage for a few months so that if we hated it, we could return it. We kept it.
We later got a Blackstone memory foam from Costco without lying on it since they have a great return policy and I love this bed. Better than the Casper. It's the most comfortable in our house, but it's our guest bed and only a twin XL.
Most recently, we got DS a cheaper but well rated mattress on Amazon.. and I hate it and we can't return it. But he's 4 and has no complaints, so we live with it.
So I would TOTALLY buy another mattress online without trying for it, but ONLY from somewhere with a good return policy.
H and I bought a Queen size Leesa online 4.5 years ago now. We love it so much we bought a twin size Leesa for our DS when we moved him to a twin bed last fall. When we bought, if you didn't like it after 100 days (I think), they'd come pick it up and donate it to a shelter. That really appealed to us.
I went to Macy's for this reason 2 weekends ago and had a great experience! Only 1 other customer in that department and they were very careful with distance and handing out pillow covers, etc.
I was in and out within 30 minutes and felt great about my decision after trying several out (I did a little research beforehand).
And 50% off - great sale!
Add: I ended up with a Serta Perfect Sleeper Plush Trelleburg pillow top. It's comfy!
Thanks everyone! We ended up going to a mattress store and buying one. We were the only ones there and picked it out in about 10 minutes. It got delivered yesterday. One of the delivery guys wasn’t wearing a mask which was annoying but other than that, it was fine.
We also bought Zinus mattress few months ago. It's firmer than we expected it to be, but still this is a great mattress. It helped my wife to deal with her low back pain!
