I suck at parenting. My baby's birthday is this week and he really has no gifts besides a new book of Thomas stories. His love is cars and Thomas right now and we have a train table, plenty of trains, a million and five cars and Hot Wheels track. He has a bike, trike, plasma car, radio flyer scooter, wagon (all hand me down, but in too good of condition to replace). I asked my inlaws to get him the leap frog ice cream cart I have heard good reviews about. I'm going to look for some small pool and beach toys since that's all we do now. Maybe some kind of toddler craft he can do independently or easy puzzles - we have harder ones and smaller kid ones? I suck at this.

My daughter is only 2 but she and her 2.5 friend LOVE the water table. DD could play at her water table every single day. Or I know a Nugget is a hot item right now? Kinetic sand? I'd love to get DD a toddler trampoline like our babysitter has but the ones available are too expensive for our budget.
My 3 year old loves magnatiles (we have the Amazon brand - Picasso I think. Much cheaper and have held up really well). He plays with them several days a week and has since Christmas. He is also a big fan of kinetic sand and playdoh.

My boys love kinetic sand! I buy disposable aluminum baking pans to keep it contained along with a set of small construction trucks and they’ll quietly play for a ridiculous amount of time. My kids are not the quiet play type so it’s a big deal lol.
A simple remote control car was also a big hit at that age but be prepared to go through seven gazillion batteries.
Also, I gave in and bought more cars for both kids for their birthdays this year because the novelty of a new toy was exciting for them and there’s so little they can look forward to these days.

Does he have any big vehicles like Bruder trucks? Those were a favorite for my vehicle loving kid and got played with in so many ways for such a long time. He had a recycling truck, fire truck, cement truck, log truck, and another brand big boat, and he loved them all.
My boys are 2.5 and 5, and this is what gets the most use between both of them:
- Little construction vehicles with any kind of moveable medium - sand, little rocks, dirt, kinetic sand, water beads, playdough - Water table - Lincoln Logs - Magnet tiles (we have Picasso from amazon) - Shake n Go cars and track - Duplo train sets - Transformer rescue bots guys - Easel and chalk/markers (cheap version from ikea) - Coloring books and stickers - Step 2 coaster - Kids table/chair set from ikea - Hungry hungry hippos game - Little basketball hoop - Tool bench and battery powered tools - Vtech go go track and cars - Bounce house
ETA - they also like having the "guys" from any of their favorite shows - super wings, octonauts, etc.
For us - basically any kind of vehicle and/or track set is a hit. They love construction trucks, fire trucks, car carriers, etc. If you can put a vehicle inside another vehicle, it's better. Any kind of messy, water, outdoor summer toy is great right now. They love kid versions of anything we do - gardening, cleaning, cooking, etc.
Does he have a big kid bed/room yet? When my older one turned 3, we re-did his room as his gift. It was something we would have bought anyway, so it made into a gift very nicely, lol.
Anything you’d find in a preschool would be good. My recently turned 4 year old was suddenly at home in March, and I wished we had a water table or sand box. He loves the puzzles at school so we got some more for home. Alphabet and number wooden ones are great, along with ones of favorite characters. We also have wooden alphabet lacing beads and and lacing boards. When he was 3 he really loved the duplo Lego train. He still plays with duplo and regular Legos, but the duplos are nice since he can do them by himself. This year he got the paw patrol tower and it keeps him very entertained. I get my kids stuff they need, like water bottles, utensils, pajamas, undies, etc, with their favorite characters on it. Chalk, bubbles, outdoor toys that get ruined over time, etc. are always good. It doesn’t have to be expensive or unique. I’m sure he’ll be excited to open any present.

Good idea. We lost our kinetic sand when we moved, but I think new kinetic sand with those tubs and toy cars is a great idea.
my son turns 3 in a few weeks. On our list is: magnatiles, remote monster truck, hot wheels tracks, new bike with pedals, binoculars and costumes and books.
Things he is OMG SUPER INTO: anything monster trucks and super heroes, trampoline, bikes, bubbles (he just got a bubble gun and it is the only toy gun we allow.), soccer ball and kid sized soccer net.
