Currently we have a table runner that I really like. It's a cream crochet style piece. But that's all it has and it looks incomplete. I had a mini tea light centerpiece that goes from short to tall to short again in a sort of wave formation. I liked it, but it always looked incomplete. Is something like the picture below too old lady. I definitely have a more traditional design sensibility. (Like I love Erin's style on HomeTown) There is a line somewhere between my grandma's style and a more modern version of it.
Random Ikea question. Are the plants that IKEA sells fake or real or does it depend on the plant? I have two areas where we need some plant life but I kill plants. Like I kill the the unkillable plants

My dining table is a collector of random crap. Under all of that is a blush runner and tray with dried hydrangeas from my garden. Still prob not what your looking for.

Yeah, my table is functional versus pretty. I have a cover on it that is fabric from India and salt/pepper shakers plus paper napkins. I'm jealous of people who have pretty tables.
I don’t think what you posted looks old lady, but if they aren’t real plants, they’d probably collect a lot of dust. My table has a needlepoint runner and a soup tureen, so pretty old lady-ish but I love it and it’s meaningful to me.

Those are both lovely. I would display those as well. I think the dust would be an issue. I think I will take your suggestion memenee and do the tray with candles. That was I can intersperse more "seasonal" items like fall leaves or lemons or what have you.
mrsukyankee I agree as we have a completely functional "kitchen table" and I don't worry about that one being pretty. This is for our seldom used dining table. Even though its seldom used, I still want it to look nice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
