Trump moves to ban TikTok

It is not surprising to me that he is trying to ban TikTok since it is a way for people to communicate, organize, and send out information.

Eta: I just reread my last statement. How fucked up is it that I am not surprised that POTUS is trying to ban freedom of speech and expression through the censorship and banning of a company?!?!

Eta2: ok so TikTok is very problematic. Don’t like the idea of censorship but I don’t like the issues with the company itself.

Uh. TikTok has been accused of blocking Hong Kong protest videos, and banning lgbtqia+ folks. Let's not throw our whole support behind a company just because Trump is an asshole.

Tik Tok is a Chinese company that regularity has Chinese officials onsite (assumingely for censorship reasons). Also what as they doing with the information they are collecting? This was on a podcast I listened to a while back now.

I also, very strongly, urge you to remove TikTok from your phones. I've read reports from pretty much the beginning from security experts begging people to not download it.

I’m also not a tiktok user and didn’t realize there was a lot of censorship on that platform. I’m too old now to bother with all the fad social apps. I agree with mockingbird though that Trump wouldn’t care at all about this if it weren’t for him getting trolled on there.

Congress has been looking at it since last November as a security risk. The joint armed forces banned it in January. So way before his rallies. Why are you guys making me defend him?!

I don't have a source bc I saw it in a *gasp* tiktok video but apparently Instagram has a new feature coming out on August 5th that is basically like tiktok. It will have videos you can scroll through with sounds that you can use to make your own videos and the layout looked very similar. Can't verify it's true but the 5th is soon enough to see.

That is definitely a problem with Tiktok “shadowbanning” videos but many people have found ways to influence the algorithm (shares and comments increase views) My anecdote is I’ve connected with more LGBTQ+ and social justice content creators there than any other platform. I’ve learned so much from the various voices and would be sad to see it go.

I don’t know about Hong Kong videos. But I would estimate 30-40% of my FYP is from LGBTQ creators. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but I’m still getting a huge amount of content from such creators. Where did the accusations come from? A news article?

I don’t think it was Turkey, but rather TikTok that restricted the content.

VPN. At varies points in Thailand in the last couple years the daily mail was banned because they wrote an article critical of the then prince and now king.
I cannot access friendly atheist presumably because atheist in its name and they bring up a man jailed for 2 years for being only atheist on fb. That one isn't banned exactly, the page just won't ever load. Banned sites have an official seal and a "this is banned' statement.

Luddites who make these bans don't realize nothing dies on the internet. Even in China I easily got around it just so I could use Google maps.

Well his message is convenient given that Microsoft is in talks to buy Tik Tok. Is where he got word of the talks and will now look like a “hero” for bringing money back to the US?
