Just curious, what are the rules around having pets (specifically dogs) while living on base? Are there restrictions that apply to all bases or does each base have different rules / restrictions / requirements?
- # of dogs maximum - breed restrictions? - does base housing have fenced yards? Are dogs allowed off-leash?
This will vary by base, but generally no more than 2 pets per household. No pitbulls. Some yards are fenced, some aren't. When you call the housing office to see what's available tell them you need a fenced yard because you have a dog.
And dogs are not allowed off leash, but they seem to escape their yards fairly frequently, at least here. There are constantly lost and found dog posts on our FB page

Hi! Here, new residents can only have 2 pets, we only have one for now but I've seen some that has 3 dogs. We are not allowed to have pit bulls, rottweilers and doberman pinschers and pets must be on leash at all times.

the places we've been- if it wasn't fenced you could add a fence, but you had to take it down when you left. there were even fence rental places.
ETA- why are you curious about off leash dogs? I think its a bad idea in general to have your dogs off leash when just out and about like on a walk (not like hiking or at a dog park or whatever in an established "ok to be off leash area" place) because i think it tends to be an issue with on-leash dogs (more aggression from the leashed dog). Whenever a non-leashed dog comes over to my leashed dog, he goes crazy and the owners seem to have a hard time controlling their dog. I'm probably giving you the side-eye if you're trying to tell me how well behaved your non-leashed dog is if they won't come when you tell them to and are causing a ruckus with my dog. My old neighbor used to use let their dog out on its own, and it would always shit behind my house so I had to clean it up, and my dog would be in a small little fenced area and would go CRAZY when their dog was out.
Sorry, this is a huge pet peeve of mine wrt to off leash dogs.
Thanks for all the info! Sounds good. We have 2 mutts from our local rescue shelter -- I think they're Cattle Dog mixes We will definitely try and get a fenced yard!

I completely agree -- this is a pet peeve of mine, as well. In fact, it can cause a lot of anxiety for the dog on-leash if it's approached by a dog off-leash. I'm not planning to have my dogs off-leash (unless in a dog park, etc.) but was just trying to get an idea of what it's like with pets on an AFB (will there be dogs running wild? do homes have yards / fences? etc.).

On base in Japan, I don't think they had breed restrictions. No housing came with fences, but you could buy one (very expensive there). However, you had to take it down before moving.
If you were caught with an off leash dog you could be cited.
And... that's all I know. Never had to/wanted to live on base, and I didn't there, but I looked into the rules since it would have allowed me to skip quarantine.
