Is anyone else watching this show on HBO Max? I watched the first episode and it is outstanding, and outrageous. The first episode was awesome. If you like horror type shows I highly recommend it.
But! I also recommend reading this (kind of long but super interesting) read about H.P. Lovecraft and what "Lovecraftian Horror" is and it's racist roots--but the huge influence it has on the genre. I think it makes the show even more interesting. I can't wait to see all the episodes.

I’ve not seen it, but The Root had a blurb up about racists finally getting a good murder-y end and not some quick and painless end like in Watchmen, so it piqued my interest.
I’m not big on horror though.
On a scale of AYAOTD to AHS to Stephen King, where would you place this?
I watched this with my H, begrudgingly. I'm not a generally horror fan although I like some stuff that borders on it if it's kind of sci-fi or whatnot.
But this might have been the best first episode of any show I've ever seen.

You can only watch one episode so I can't tell for sure but it's made by Misha Green, JJ Abrams, and Jordan Peele. So I think it's at like AHS level. It does have that "Peele" feel of story telling to it but then all the sudden you get this crazy addition of the "horror" and by horror, I mean like monsters.
There are some things that are awesome about the show--the Black heroes/heroines and then they are messing around with that is "horror," and who are the monsters. This is the element that I think has the Jordan Peele in it.
I read that article about Lovecraft and it was super interesting. That he was a racist, fear based prick who had a huge impact on the genre, but a LOT of people didn't know exactly who he was and the impact he had--and that now it's like the industry is trying to figure out how to reconcile this impact and this show is one of those attempts. I'm definitely going to continue watching b/c I think that is what creativity and higher level thinking is about.
I'm excited to watch this though I think we're going to wait until closer to the last episode air date so we can pretty much binge the season. I've gotten used to doing that with most series and it's a hard habit to break. Ha.

Yes to this.
“That horrific realization that all Lovecraft’s characters undergo that the universe doesn’t revolve around them? That’s not a problem any Black character would ever have.”
“”If you’re Black,” he said, “you don’t think the universe as a whole thinks you are wonderful because all you have to do, if you’re a Black American, all you have to do is walk through America, and this country teaches you. ... The idea that you would be driven mad because you found out that the universe doesn’t think you’re special is a joke to me as a Black American.””
I’m going to check this out once a few eps have dropped.
If anyone gets HBO, also check out The Plot Against America and Watchmen. Both are fantastic.
I doubt I'll get H to watch it with me, but it sounds like exactly the kind of thing I love. Also, I really enjoyed reading Lovecraft. I wasn't aware of anything else about him, but now I'm really intrigued to see how people work with his genre to ultimately change it and grow it.
It's like reading science fiction from the "golden age" and then reading science fiction from present day writers. Blows my mind, and I love it!
So we watched this and I had not heard of it or had any prior knowledge about it. At first I was like wut in the fresh hell am I watching but the longer it went on the more I liked it. It def sucks you in.
Had no idea that was jusse smolletts sister either

I hate how HBO and Starz follow this model. It feels like they are still putting out CDs or something lol.

I wish they'd at least do a few episodes at a time, though I suppose I understand why they're sticking to the weekly model. Doesn't mean I have to like it, lol.

That’s because they still air them weekly on tv! I actually have HBO through my cable #getoffmylawn
