Psychologist was zero help and offered to do a rohrshach inkblot test on him.
Nobody uses this. No one. I have zero respect for her.
I asked why she can’t do a Conners Early childhood or a basc preschool version for daycare and parent? She said it would give her the same info as the interview I just gave her. Ok so?
Well that’s incredibly frustrating and irritating. I’m sorry you didn’t get anything useful. Hopefully you can find someone else who can actually provide the services you need.
An ink blot test? I thought that was just something they did decades ago. How on earth would that be useful!?

“I don’t test under 6.”
That’s all.
I assume the rorschach test was tongue in cheek, right? It must have been.

No: she was serious. My jaw dropped open. And I was forced to take 9 grad credits of rorschach (exner!) you guys so I know how ridiculous it is! (No I still can’t spell it. It was 16 years ago and I have deleted it from my brain.)
I mean this is on top of the first therapist I found for him...I called specifically to ask if he worked with kids and families his age and I even spoke to HIM and said...no really...I need someone who works with kids this age regularity. Not just “able” to treat, but this is their niche. He told me he had a play therapy room too. (I wanted to ask if it was the research based Child-Centered model or just a room of toys but I didn’t want to be too pushy.)
This guy. First session was just me, to gather info. This guy. He literally threw something in my lap and said “you could always use this”
I was so surprised but caught it midair. It was an air horn. This therapist suggested I use an air horn on my son. Then he showed me his play therapy room which was a gross pile of old toys like the daycare in Toy Story. I’ve never been so appalled.
Luckily his psychologist we have now is excellent but it’s so hard to have been through all this and now feel so stuck. And I know what I’m doing, and have financial means and can navigate the system and I’m STILL stuck.
I don’t want these posts to sway anyone from getting mental health help though guys. This has just been a bad experience but on the flip side my own personal therapist is amazing and really helping me work through my own stuff!

I’m so sorry you’re having so much trouble finding help. My youngest was dx with asd and adhd around 4 I think? We used a pediatric neuropsychiatrist. We had to pay out of pocket and it was quite expensive. About 2k I think. But now he’s 10 and on focalin and doing great. He’s been mainstreamed from special ed to regular classes. It makes an amazing difference. I really hope you can find some help soon.
This is pretty much what I went through. Eventually I was in a therapists room sobbing because I couldn't get help for him, she texted a friend from grad school who specializes in evaluations, got a reply right there saying she would do the eval and gave me her contact info to set up a time.
I'm about 30 minutes north of Ann Arbor, Michigan and I know of another place that might be able to help east of here closer to Detroit. If you're near me, send me a PM and I'll share the info I have.

That's crazy. I learned exner system too, and could probably argue a situation where it'd be appropriate. This is not it. Zomg.
I'm sorry you've had such a run around trying to get him appropriate services. Are you able to get him in with a pediatric neuropsychologist? Or developmental pediatrician?
Im sorry it is so frustrating that you have to jump through all these hoops then when you find someone that will see him it's a 6 month wait for a consult, then another couple months for the eval in our experience. My son sounds very similar and was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety at 4 and although I had a hard time recognizing the anger outbursts as anxiety I can now see it a little better. He is struggling again right now but he is starting kinder virtually and his daycare which was supposed to be not a change still is changing because they are adjusting the room for all the kids to learn online. He started on guanfacine and we saw immediate change, then we kept increasing the dose until we got to the max and added zoloft. We are now switching to prozac because it doesnt seem to be lasting long enough. Our developmental pediatrician still is trying to avoid stimulants and wants to treat the anxiety as the root cause for his impulsivity. He is 5.5

I’m sorry. We had my daughter diagnosed with ADHD, inattentive type, when she was eight. It took nearly a year to get an appointment with the ADHD initiative at a branch of the Children’s Hospital two hours away. Our pediatrician was willing to prescribe meds, but I wanted a full evaluation. It was life changing. I wish we had it done when she was in kindergarten.
