DS is starting hockey again here soon - second year. He has the mesh shorts with the velcro flaps to hook his socks to, but needs another layer underneath. Last year, he used 2 different pairs of long underwear bottoms, but they didn't hold up wonderfully. What do you use as a thin layer underneath? I don't really want to pay $35 a piece for Under Armor tights. Does Old Navy have something similar? Would it be ridiculous to get him a few pairs of girls leggings - like navy or black? Cat & Jacks are on sale for $5 right now.

My DD has been figure skating for 10 years. She likes Primary leggings, but has had Old Navy in the past. Cat and Jack is too big for her waist, but could work for a wider boy. The waist is key. Some brands run small in the waist and some are much larger, like Cat and Jack.
Another figure skater mom here, but we use the girls version of these. They’re great quality and a little water proof - more then regular leggings. Here’s the boys version:
Do you have a Costco membership? We use the 32 Degrees base layer for my 7yo hockey player when he's playing outdoors. When he's indoors, he just wears athletic pants and pulls his hockey socks over them and we tape them on.
Yeah I am not a hockey mom but H and I play and we do not use a base layer on the bottom. I don't pay *that* much attention but I think a lot of other adult players also skip it.

Ditto this. My son's not playing hockey...yet (he wants to but he has to learn how to skate first and that will come after soccer ends, apparently he needs to add ANOTHER damn sport ) but the 32 degrees base layer is great.
