Have you ever gifted stock or bought actual paper shares?

Since Apple split and is nearing $100/pps I was thinking of buying a share for each of my nieces/nephews and gifting it to them for their HS graduation. I'm going to look into Giveashare and Stockpile, but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas/experience with it.
