But if Trump wins, I don't think it's a jump to some sort of civil war.
This is interesting to me because I personally feel like a civil war is more likely if he’s not elected, contested or otherwise.
I think the racial issues are going to increase and we are going to end up on sort of battle. Whether it's a full blown civil war or something specific to larger cities, I just can't see it not happening. And Trump encourages it.

I don’t think it will just be racial.
Women, religion, and lgbtqia issues are going to explode in a second term with an unbalanced court.
Jump? I think it was a jump in 2016 maybe, but I don’t think it’s a jump to wonder about civil war now.
I mean, Trump’s DOJ just designated three American cities as anarchist jurisdictions in order to defund us, including mine. Smells like setting the stage for a civil war to me.
Agreed.
My boss said her husband (a firefighter) has been told to prepare for unrest on the Election Day no matter who wins. She said the NG is also supposed to be prepared, but I don’t have a true source for that.

Did you guys see that Atlantic article that (I think) dropped today? I think it's the November cover story but they released it early. Here's a link if you have a subscription or free reads left.
"The worst case, however, is not that Trump rejects the election outcome. The worst case is that he uses his power to prevent a decisive outcome against him. If Trump sheds all restraint, and if his Republican allies play the parts he assigns them, he could obstruct the emergence of a legally unambiguous victory for Biden in the Electoral College and then in Congress. He could prevent the formation of consensus about whether there is any outcome at all. He could seize on that uncertainty to hold on to power."
I think we’re in for ballot issues going way beyond the hanging chads. Like straight up losing or destroying ballots in those closely contested states which will someday be attributed to the Russians or something.
There is not going to be a civil war. We can barely get people interested in wearing masks.
Well, but Trump and his followers actively want to kill people as it is.
Yes, but they'd rather kill the people they already have as prisoners. (See the concentration camps that are erected) That being said, for the majority of Rs that I know, this is all still a game to them. If it starts hitting them where it hurts (aka actually killing people themselves), they're not going to be able to do it. Individual or small group violence? Yes, absolutely. Full scale violence? No.
My hope is that the dickheads who were going to stay home or vote third party now hate Mitch McConnell too bad to do that. I was heartened by the ActBlue fundraising over the weekend after RBG’s passing.
However, I’d be pleasantly surprised if Joe wins and not surprised at all if Trump does, so I guess that’s my answer.
GOD I WANT TO HIT HIM WITH MY FUCKING CRV
Someone sent an envelope with ricin in it to trump. When I heard the news I smiled. I know the hate has taken over me now, and that is unhealthy for me.

I read an article today about how multiple sources in the GOP have said that the Trump campaign is already strategizing about how they can get Republican legislatures in swing states to disregard the popular vote if Biden wins and seat a slate of Trump electors. It would be based on the fact that legislators get to set the manner electors are seated -- they'd play off that to seat their own electors who would vote for Trump. the justification will be that the mail-in ballots were so pervaded with alleged fraud and irregularities that the popular vote can't be trusted. The chair of the Pennsylvania Republican Party is already on the record as saying that is one of the options they will consider when the time comes.
It'd be contested, but with Alito, Thomas, and the Trump 3, I have no doubt that they would find some way to uphold it. And the rest of the GOP won't say boo because they want power and they can tell people that it's AOK because fraud/electors were originally chosen by the legislature so this is totally consistent with our country/whatever.
But honestly I don't think we'll get that far. If we were a straight popular vote country I wouldn't be worried, but we're not. I read a different article today that said that voter registration for white voters without a college degree (a/k/a Trump voters) is up over 40% in states like Wisconsin, Minnesota, and....a third state I'm forgetting that matters, while registration for minorities is up only 4%. We're not going to get the voter turnout we need in the right places, and he'll win on the electoral college again because too many people are actively terrible or have convinced themselves that Trump is a lesser evil than Biden because socialism or other justifications.

There are “armed militias” of crazy ass gun toting white people patrolling Louisville. If Trump claims victory then I’m sure there will be protests, and I’m sure these Second Amendment nutbars (likely encouraged in a *wink wink* from Trump) will head out into the streets to push people around.
I’m sure at least a few people are going to die because of this election. Obviously I hope I’m wrong.

The more I think about it, the more this poll is so disheartening. Even our base doesn’t think we can win. And we chose Biden, presumably, because he was “electable.” Like .. we lined up the oldest, whitest, blandest man we could find for this purpose.
I wonder how the results of this poll would have gone if someone like Warren had gotten the nom. Or if, like, Michelle Obama were running. Are we so sure of Trump’s appeal — so pessimistic about our fellow Americans — or do we just really not like Biden?

I am pessimistic about my fellow Americans. I don’t trust Bernie bros to show up And I think we were led to believe Hillary had such a grand chance of winning because the silent trump supporters slid in under the radar. I think people know they should be ashamed to support him but they do anyway.

Personally, it's not Biden's appeal that I'm worried about. It's Trump's willingness to find every loophole and even break laws to stay in power. I think Biden will win the popular vote, just like Hillary did last time.

Exactly. I think Biden will win and Trump will reduce to concede and step down. I do not think we will have a peaceful transition of power this time. Words that come to mind are coup and deposed. But that assumes anyone puts their oath to the constitution above their oath to a fascist.
