I wanted to show you all the finished bookshelves and what the room looks like now. We got built ins off of Marketplace, and after modifying them extensively, we were very happy with the result. I also got to fulfill my desire for a rolling ladder! Here’s the listing photo to show a real “before”
and here is the bookshelf before we got started.
Here’s the finished product.
We painted and put up crown molding, and my husband also completely soundproofed the room. Clearly, I still need to work on making the shelves pretty and switch out some decor items.
For now, I need to find window treatments, and a new desk chair. I’m also debating changing the chairs in the window (the pillows were added by my 7 year old, from her bed 😂). I wonder about painting the door and windows white as well. I kind of like the wood tones around the windows, with their warm homey feeling, but the door feels like a big brown expanse. All the rest of the molding in the house is wood toned, and I don’t want to go down the rabbit hole of painting it all. Can I paint just one side of the door? Do I even need to?
We bought this house from an estate. The previous owner was a doctor and researcher. She made this ~4000 sf house Into her personal library 3 of the 4 bedrooms had built in shelves from floor to ceilings with each room having Putnam brand rolling Ladders.
I was going to sell them dirt cheap on marketplace. Then I did some research on them. Apparently they are special and 💰 💰 💰
I’m going to reuse them in the master closet, Walk in pantry And likely take the rest to my next home. We tend to move every 3-5 years.

Wow it looks great! The ladder is so fun!
Speaking as someone who has no fewer than 9 painted doors in my house which have been beaten to heck and back... don’t paint unless you really truly want to. I’m dreading the process of fixing my doors. I like your wood door with the wood window frames.

My husband agrees with you, and I appreciate doing less work! 😜
That looks awesome! I wouldn't paint the door or the trim. We have some wood trim in our family room that I debated painting when we did a larger paint job, but we left them and I think it works and does warm it up a bit.

Love them! We've had built-ins added in three places since we bought our house. I love them!
Also, any chance you would want to consider changing the hardware on the desk? I know it's a traditional style, but I think that would update the look considerably with very little effort.
