I want to participate in nakniswemo and want to knit something easy to get back into the swing of it. I can't spend a ton though because we will now have medical bills since H was in the hospital Monday /Tuesday. Preferably $100 or less. Is knitpicks my best option? Any other suggestions? I'm gonna sort through destash also on reddit. I have a Sox yarn but I hated it and want to get rid of it.
I wouldn’t suggest knitpicks. I made two sweaters with their yarn years ago and they grew in unimaginable ways and completely lost their shape. It was brutal. I swatched and everything and I’ve never had an issue like that before or since.
I’ll second Cascade 220. Nice bright colours and it gives a reliable finish.
I'll add that I used Cascade 220 SUPERWASH worsted, and while scratchy, it is easy to wash and has softened a little over time. I don't recall any bleeding of the color, either.

I just ordered blindly from Holst Garn. It's all lighter weight yarn but was really budget friendly with decent reviews so figured I would try it out. Have you ever used it?
Depending on the size you're making, I really like malabrigo Rios (worsted weight). I've made two sweaters with it and the one I finished and have worn (the other still needs to be blocked...) has really held up. I've machine washed and dried it.

No, but I googled and those colors look delicious.

Have you picked a pattern?
I hadn't when I made this post but now that I ordered a bunch of lightweight yarns I have to. H decided he wants a cardigan so I think I'm going to make the Playdate cardi by Tin Can Knits

I know I am late in responding, but if you have used KnitPicks and didn't care for the yarn, don't swear them off completely. I have made about 10 sweaters using their yarn (both adult and kid sizes) and all have held up really well. Maybe try a different blend or type?
I also love Malabrigo Rios, and Worsted. Their yarn is incredible. Another place to check is Little Knits. They get close out yarns and often times, they will have good prices on sweater quantity.
As for scratchy yarn, I have found that when blocking, add a bit of hair conditioner to help the yarn soften up. It works like a charm.
