Sounds like our kitchens are a similar size and layout!
We did cabinets on the other side of the sink peninsula since the dining table is like a foot away -- a breakfast bar would have been silly, and we need the storage. Ignore the weird floor, we've fixed that since these photos were taken. :-)
We squeezed a LOT of storage into that pull-out to the left of the fridge and the shallow cabinet to the right of it:
dr.girlfriend random question but is that microwave just a regular countertop one? We are starting our kitchen reno and in our uppers we may do a microwave cabinet just like you have but I don’t know if it needs to be a built in microwave so it’s vented or if I can just stick a countertop one in there. Thank you, in advance

The general contractor told us we can stick the one we have in there. He said the electrician may want the plug we'll add for it to be on it's own breaker but that'll be up to the electrician who updates the wiring.
We've had built in over the stove / hood combos in a couple houses, but didn't want one for this place.
Yeah, that's our ancient one that we had before. We planned to get a fancier one, but lost steam. :-) I think there's just a certain amount of clearance you need in the back, and they did put in a special ground-interrupt outlet for it I think.
I did buy an extra full-size door that fits that cabinet for if we change our mind and want to switch it out, but we're really happy we left it in the cabinet. It would take up too much counterspace, and me and the kid are too short for an over-the-stove microwave.

I think it looks great, no need for a “fancy” one! Thank you for answering my question!

Ha, you have to slam it really hard for the door to shut all the way, so now it's such a habit that when I went to my sister's house I *slammed* her microwave door and she was like, "What the ?"
