We're getting the boys a basketball arcade thing. Also looking at things like indoor trampoline, scooter boards, spooner board, tumbling mat, swing chairs.
DS1 is getting a metal detector I think which is more of an outdoor thing. Triplets are getting more train tracks and hot wheels stuff.
We have a metal detector and my kids really like it a lot and always have. It's a fun thing to have.
Which one do you have? I was looking at the nat geo jr one.
Oh, sorry, I got our secondhand off craigslist. It's a regular adult kind? I'll go check it later and report back. I don't know that I would get a kid one; I assume a regular one finds more things / is stronger? That's just a guess though.
This isn't a "big" gift, OP, but one thing that has really occupied time in the house for my kids is a ping pong set that attaches to a table. We set it up in the kitchen on the kitchen table. I got it second hand but it's like this - it takes like 5 seconds to set up:
I know trampolines are controversial here but we are replacing our trampoline with a new Springfree trampoline. So that’s a gift from Santa to all the kids.
Older boys are getting new boogie boards.
DS1 will get Nintendo switch money.
With Covid they’ve all gotten some pretty nice things we would have saved for Christmas like a new guitar, new iPad so I’m not going too nuts for Christmas. Most everything has been purchased as the trampoline and boogie boards all had two month wait times for delivery.

I think we are going to do a treadmill. My 11 year old likes running and missed cross country and track this year. My husband and I also need something.
My 11 year old will be getting a new Kindle and art supplies. My six year old wants her own Echo dot, more magformers, Legos or Playmobile. We are hoping to rent a house over break for a change of scenery, so we are not going overboard.

I just went and looked and it's the following -- which apparently I just kind of lucked into a good one, because I wasn't discerning at all when I got it and it was only $25 used. I don't know that I'd pay $95 for it but maybe if I were super into metal detecting?

I always find these threads helpful, and since I just finished 10 YO DS's shopping today, here's what he's getting. It'll be split between Hanukkah and Christmas.
I feel like there's one other small $5 item for his stocking, but I can't think of what it is.
ETA Usually I do some books, but we got him several recently and he's still working thru them. If he gets to a point where he's close to the end of them, though, I'll add the next book in the Spirit Animals series that he's reading.
We want to get C a portable basketball hoop for the driveway. We aren’t allowed to leave them outside for extended periods unless they are permanently installed, so we want one that will be easy to roll in and out of the garage.

My 12 year old’s big gift will be a Wacom drawing tablet and animation software that she can use on our home computer because she’s very into drawing and animation and wants to be able to do more than what she can do with her iPad.
DD1 is 12 and we are getting her a papasan chair for her room. She needs a reading nook. I actually found a frame at a resale shop for $20. I will get this cushion from World Market.
DD2 is almost 9 - I think we are going to get her an electric scooter.
This list has inspired me to brainstorm! I am considering a tumble track for my 9-year-old. She has a few gymnastics mats that get a ton of use, so this might be a good way for her to flip through a pandemic winter.
My dad absolutely scored the deal of a life time on a tumble track for DD2. HIs neighbor does those truckload sales where he gets pallets of random stuff and then sells them. My dad saw he had a tumble track, offered him $60, and he took it! He obviously had no idea what it was. But a 16ft tumble track for $60 is bananas. The thing retails for like $350! I told my dad to save it for Christmas, but he was took excited and gave it to her a month ago.

same here! I thought they were way more expensive for some reason. My 9 yr old gymnast would love it and we have room in our basement for one.

Lots of price points! I tend to find the best deals on gymnastics mats on eBay of all places.
ohgillian, I love your list. My 10 year old thanks you!
I saw a brew your own root beer kit that I think I'm going to get. Soda is one thing I've mostly stuck to not having. We sometimes get those ones without HFC and he LOVES root beer.

Looking to spend less than $250, any recs?
If you need to wheel it inside on occasion, do not get an expensive one. Stick with the $100 range hoops from Walmart. They are SO HEAVY even on wheels. You need to add water or sand to the base so it doesn't tip over. Add in the fact that it's sitting out in the elements and the parts start to get a bit rusty/dirty and they just don't move very well. We bought an adjustable hoop for around $150 from Walmart last year and it is staying where we put it. We also can no longer adjust it. The neighbors have a REALLY fancy hoop outside that was probably $400, and they can't adjust the height of theirs anymore, either.
Go cheap. Especially if your child is under 12 and can manage without a pro height hoop.
I just found the one we have. It's solid, and I wish we had gone a little smaller. So flipping heavy and not truly movable. $98

That one looks nice. I wonder if we could weight it down with cinderblocks or sandbags while we use it, then remove them when it’s time to wheel into the garage? We’re in FL though, so humidity and rust is definitely a concern.

Our neighbors have have of gravel laying on top of theirs! I thought it was for added weight, but maybe it's the only thing weighing down their hoop?
DD will be getting a mix of things but a lot of it is The Child/Baby Yoda (plush, sheets, figure) since she loves him! She will also get a LEGO set either Harry Potter and/or LEGO friends. She also wants some type of craft/art things so I’m sure she will get at least one artistic thing.
DS has b-day and Xmas in December so we usually get him more. He will get LEGO Minecraft panda nursery, LEGO Marvel Avengers tower, Marvel Villainous infinite power board game, a squishmallow, a switch game (either Luigis Haunted Mansion 3, or if we are really generous the Mario Cart with the real figure who plays in your house), and possibly a snowboard. He also wants little Pokémon figures that he can battle.
