Since we haven't vacationed since COVID other than a month at our family vacation home we plan to spend more at Christmas for some extra fun. What, if any, big gifts are you doing this year? Trying to think of things that will help occupy time inside the house for when weather is too cold/bad to be outside playing and we won't be going to indoor play places, museums, movies etc. My kids are 8, 9, and 11.
Following for ideas. DD turns 10 next month and it's hard. She doesn't need anything and doesn't really want anything either. We are re-doing her room for her birthday. For Christmas I'll probably just get Lego sets, a Switch game, and and a few craft kits she has her eye on. Nothing too exciting but should keep her busy.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

DD1 wants the American Girl doll bed (Courtney). She says she has so many stories for it.
DD2 is getting a dollhouse. She loves playing with DD1s. But the 9 year old sets it up so carefully she doesn’t want it be touched. So she will get her own.

I'm thinking of a KiwiCrate subscription for DS2. He loves to build stuff. His birthday is in December, so he will get Lego sets for that and Christmas. He wants the train, so $$.

My older two are 9 and almost 7. They are getting a Switch as a shared gift, with a couple of games each. We also got an outdoor projector/8-ft screen on Prime Day. While that's more an outdoor option, we can set it up in our loft for movie nights in the winter.
We got new bedding and updated decor for my 9-year-old's birthday in June. That was a hit.
DS is nearing 8 yrs old. His big gift this year is the Lego WeDo 2.0 robotics set. It's from their educational line and intended for classroom use, so the set is fairly large / meant for more than one child. He's really into Legos and coding right now. I think he's going to flip once he realizes what he's opening.
Some of other items he's getting, including stocking stuffers: - Duct Tape (his request, he uses it for making things with cardboard) - a huge stack of BOOKS - Lego Advent Calendar - Tactile Rubik's cube (each color has a different shape embossed) - Magnetic Coin Building Set (foreign coins, link) - Hasbro PS4 game set (so we can play Monopoly on the screen as a family)

I was thinking outdoor stuff like a bigger bike or a trampoline, but we live in a place where it doesn’t rain much or snow ever. Your kids are older and I feel like “big” stuff gets smaller and more expensive. Aside from video games, you could do an MP3 player and/or good headphones. Nice jewelry, but they doesn’t occupy time.
We're getting the boys a basketball arcade thing. Also looking at things like indoor trampoline, scooter boards, spooner board, tumbling mat, swing chairs.
DS1 is getting a metal detector I think which is more of an outdoor thing. Triplets are getting more train tracks and hot wheels stuff.

DD and DS1 are 10 years old. No idea for DD, but probably finally relenting and getting a bearded dragon for DS1. He's asked for several years now, and I think he is old enough that he'll at least attempt to care for it.
We have all of my kids' bdays plus Christmas coming up.
DD's list so far (6th grade, almost 12 at Christmas): -New Uggs -Re-do her room (bedding, etc; maybe paint walls) -Fuzzy saucer chair for her room -Hoverboard -Vintage American Girl Cecile doll which is $$ -boatload of other expensive vintage American Girl items
DS's list so far (4th grade; will have just turned 10 at Christmas): --Really into Jurassic World lately and wants Jurassic World dinosaur toys. It's like a resurgence of when he was four. --REALLY wants Jurassic World new Switch game that's coming out. --a bunch of big Lego sets, mostly Jurassic World, some Star Wars, maybe the Mario builder one. --he likes strategy games a lot so probably some kind of board game --he really wants a snake, lizard or similar pet but I don't think that's happening.
This was a few years ago but we have something like this and keep it in the garage. My kids still love it (14 and 11). Ours is just basketball and we bought extra basketballs at 5 below since it only came with 4. I think they are 8" balls but not positive. Just check that before :-)

2 girls, ages 9 and 12. We are redoing both their rooms plus bathroom. The 12 YO is getting a full room makeover; I really haven't done much since she was an infant except change the bed so it is time. New queen size bed, paint and decor. The 9 YO is getting new bedding and a hanging chair for her room, more like an update/refresh. Their surprise will be a TV for the playroom. I'm pretty anti "screen" in general but right now, when they have friends over, they have to watch movies in our family room. I want them to be able to watch upstairs in the loft/playroom. They will be so shocked and surprised.
ETA- the 12 YO needs a new watch. She's on her second Vivofit 4 and it doesn't work. Her school does not allow "smart" watches that allow messaging but she can have a watch that tracks steps, has timers etc. Any recs?

DS1 (10) asked for a rock tumbler and a specific Nerf gun. We also are getting him a stack of books and a Barnes and Noble GC. DS2 (8) asked for a gumball STEM kit from the Amazon catalog and a big Lego set. He also is getting a stack of books and a Barnes and Noble GC.
On top of that, they always get hand sewn PJ pants and some knitted items. They ask for them every single year.
CloudBee, We bought our 7 year old DS that wedo lego set this year for a virtual robotics club he joined. He does love it!
We are getting a nice telescope for him for Christmas. I also wanted to get some outdoor play stuff - like a rope tunnel, a tree swing, maybe some kind of climbing wall - to make an activity area in our backyard. But the telescope used up all our budget for him. Maybe we'll do some of it for the 2 and 3 year olds.

This list has inspired me to brainstorm! I am considering a tumble track for my 9-year-old. She has a few gymnastics mats that get a ton of use, so this might be a good way for her to flip through a pandemic winter.
