DH isn't home at night this time of year. NOBODY rings our doorbell except for UPS during the day. So at 8:30 at night it's pitch dark in our neighborhood, but our house is blazing with light inside, so obviously we're home. Our doorbell rings. I shout, mildly panicked, over random kid noise, "Was that the doorbell???" and peek out the window. I quiz everyone about if they rang the dollhouse doorbell. We peek out DS's window. I'm like, "guys, it's fine, but I'm just not answering it right now." The kids become convinced it's "a robber" and are freaking out.
So like an hour later, I screw up my courage to check the door. It's this big treat basket--a really nice one, too! LOL!
This is like reason 4,026 why we should install the Ring doorbell I bought like 2 years ago.
LOL, I know! The last time we got "booed," several years ago, I had an infant and toddlers and I was like, "are you kidding me? Now I have to go find treats for someone???" I'm a little like that now, but it's not nearly as hard now that the kids are older and we already have tons of snacks/drinks, etc.

We got booed over the weekend and they didn't ring the doorbell, so we found it the next day on our front porch. The annoying part is just that I had gone to the store the day before and we are avoiding quick trips to stores in favor of 1x week. On the other hand it was fun for the kids and they need that now.

Our neighborhood fb group started a spin-off to 'boo' the adults with alcohol baskets. It involved filling out a questionnaire with your alcohol preferences and what foods you like to pair them with, and I was like, nope, too much work. Bah humbug, but I'd rather just buy my own alcohol and snacks...

We got booed last night by my sister in law. Was a bag full of candy that we need to now hide from the kids. Going out today to get some things for a couple neighbors, less candy related and include some alcohol lol.
I like it though, especially this year, its fun to have little surprises.
maudefindlay, SAME. I had JUST gone to the store yesterday earlier in the evening and wasn't planning to go again until after the weekend. Plus, I was at the "nice" grocery store and could have easily found stuff.
I may have to go back there tomorrow. Our basket had beer, soda, and snacks. I saw a wine display with creepy Halloween-looking labels at the store, so I might go back and get one of those, plus some of their Halloween cookies or cupcakes, and supplement with some things we have. The kids love it, but overall, it's a hassle.

Our town did something similar during the peak of lockdown. It was so ridiculous though, it was causing everyone to go out to the liquor stores at the time when we were supposed to be sheltering in place and going out as few times as possible. I'm pretty sure it was started by a liquor store to increase their sales (one of them was even giving a discount if you mentioned the FB group).
nicolewi , I think it is so funny that it took you an hour to check your door! What did you think you'd find out there? Why would a burglar or anyone meaning harm ring the doorbell? <head scratch> 8:30 PM isn't even that late...
I love the whole boo thing. I have so much fun sneaking to my neighbors and leaving a fun bag. Especially this year when everything is the suck. I threw in some flashing pumpkin necklaces and glow glasses, cookies, beer, and pumpkin decorating stickers/kits. Both houses I boo’d posted that their kids were thrilled with the surprise and that made me smile.
I didn’t ring the bell though - it’s more fun to sneak and hope they don’t catch you lol.
Haha! I legitimately laughed out loud at this, but also, same. I hate when someone rings the doorbell and I usually just hide on the couch until they go away. I've been pushing DH to get a video doorbell so I can creep on our front door and Costco has the nest on sale so I think we're finally going to get one!
Our neighborhood is doing the 'Boo' thing but our people didn't ring the bell, just left it on the porch and I found it the next morning because the dog was barking at the suspicious package, lol.
eh- we got booed from a kid in DS's cub scout pack. I don't feel like I need to boo him or all the cub scouts back. I might feel differently if it were neighbors. I don't even know all their addresses. This was one of the leader's kids, so he can look up everyone's address on their paperwork. It was nice of them, but I am a minimalist, so I've always hated those goody bags from school that are all full of dollar store crap. This was nicer than that, but I don't feel like everyone needs to gift crap to everyone. Maybe something small and useful.
This was the first year to be booed ever. I have to say I really enjoyed it. It really got me into the Halloween spirit. I immediately put our decorations which is unheard of for me since I usually wait to the last minute.
They just left it on our doorstep. Really cute and we booed some one else that night.
I want to do a version that lets me Boo someone without putting an onus on them to continue it. Maybe I could write my own poem.
Hope you enjoy this little Boo! Please don’t worry—it ends with you. No need to Boo a neighbor too, It’s just a treat, not a to-do!
I wish I had seen this a week ago! We signed up for booing in a moms group I’m in but then DD1 desperately wanted to boo the two little girls on our block and I didn’t want them to feel obligated to reciprocate or pass it on so I wrote this long note explaining it all.
Our neighborhood does this, and it’s pretty fun, but very low-stress. We “elf” people at Christmas too. I like the idea of the poem so they know they don’t have to worry about passing it on.

I love the boo-omg tradition! But by me it’s kept truly minimal. A small bag with enough pieces of Halloween candy for each kid in the household to get one. And a note explaining it and saying to pay it forward. I like how simple it is and it’s fun for the kids. This year especially it feels like something we can do to have fun while social distancing.
