Sofa table/console table question

If a table is going in between a wall and a couch how much shorter than the couch can it be?

Here is the room and we will put the table in the messy gap between the section and wall with the window

We can use premade cubeshelves and a custom tabletop to create something like this

If it would be ok for the table to be 4 inches shorter than the back of our sofa. That’s too short right? And I should just look for someone to build the above ?

I think that is too short, but you could easily raise the cubes by making a frame type piece to go under them.

We have a console table that is the tiniest bit taller than our sofa, and it drives me crazy. I wish it was an inch or so shorter than it is.

Sit on your couch and reach behind you. You want whatever you put there to be tall enough to comfortably place a drink on. Or at least I do. I love this about our family room console, and hate the fact that our living room console is so low I can't reach it from the couch.
