QOTW: What are your thoughts on giving/receiving holiday cards this year in particular? Do you like getting them? Do you plan on sending them? Does your thoughts about them change this year in particular because of all the impacts from covid (post office issues, safety of getting professional photos, lack of fun/travel photos, desire to connect more with friends/family this year, greater need for holiday spirit etc)?
I finished The Love Story of Missy Carmichael and I nearly finished The Paper Girls of Paris. I have The Henna Artist on my nightstand to read next.
QOTW: I quit sending Christmas cards in mass years ago. We never got many back and it was a lot of work during a busy month. I did send physical cards to older relatives and friends while they were alive, but they have all passed.
I finished The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett at the beginning of the week. A good book in the same vein as A Man Called Ove but not quite as poignant. Then I zipped through and loved Nobody Will Tell You This But Me. Now I'm reading When No One is Watching. I'm really liking it so far. I was hoping to finish it up today but I've been doing chores and not able to get in my reading time.
QOTW: I've been sending holiday cards for the past 6-7 years (?). I generally send a letter but I had already resolved to not do one this year having nothing to do with COVID. As travella mentioned, it's a lot of work and it's pretty thankless. If I had planned on writing a letter I would've skipped it because of the terrible year everyone's having. I think it might be rubbing salt in the wound to talk about building a patio, etc. when people are sick, dying, unemployed, and depressed. We still did a picture card with our family featured in coordinated pjs. I figure it's something that could brighten someone's day, especially the older family members. On the back of the card I included a tribute to our cat who passed away in October. I did that for our family so I don't really care what anyone else thinks. I would love to get more holiday cards but no one I know seems to do it. It bums me out.
I read: Haunted House Murder by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis, Barbara Ross Our House Is on Fire - Scenes of a Family and a Planet in Crisis - Greta Thunberg, Svante Thunberg, Malena Ernman and Beata Ernman
QOTW: I love holiday cards, and have only missed sending them out once since I was ten. I like to keep in touch with people and I usually write a personalized note in each one so they take forever to do, but it’s my thing. This year, especially, feels like a year to send them. We tape the ones we get on our pantry closet door, and I love to see it fill it up.
I have considered the waste they create. I thought about sending postcards since that’s a third of the paper. I’ve considered the ones that will plant a tree per card but the expense gives me pause for how many I buy... so far I have mostly stuck with photo printed (non-foil) paper ones that are recyclable, at least.
I’m reading Real Life by Brandon Taylor. I’m not far into it but it’s beautifully written.
QOTW: I love sending and receiving cards but it probably isn’t happening this year, mostly just because there’s too much else to do. Photo cards are my favorite but we haven’t had any good pics to use the past couple of years. Maybe next year we’ll manage to do a family photo shoot.
I'm reading Ready Player Two which is very enjoyable but not as good as the first book so far.
QOTW: I usually send regular, non-photo cards to extended family and a few friends. I doubt I will get it together to send them this year. I seriously have no sense of time. I almost told someone to have a good summer yesterday.
Not many this week at all! I had a string of bad luck and two of the YA books were very long and dragged out.
Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett
The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tervis
Love and Olives by Jenna Evans Welsh
Breathless by Jennifer Nevin
QOTW:
I like getting cards. We normally send out valentines instead of Christmas/Hanukkah cards so that isn’t affected.
That’s a good idea - sending out cards on a less common holiday. I bet that’s a nice surprise for your friends and family.
Thanks! I always think February is so gloomy and depressing so it’s nice to get something cheerful in the mail. I’ve started getting a few back over the years!
I finished A Promised Land by Barack Obama and Ready Player Two by Ernst Cline.
I started A Warm Heart in Winter by J.R. Ward.
QOTW: I'm usually really sporadic on sending cards. If I have nice family photos, I'll make up a card on Shutterfly, but we don't do family photos that often. (Last year we went to Disney World so I used those). But I noticed that I don't usually get any cards if I don't send one first. So it's kind of dumb. I think social media is killed this tradition and I don't know if I really care that much.
