We have a blank wall that’s kind of inset and we have floating shelves hung now, but they are weighed down with books and I want to have custom built-ins put in with cabinets on the bottom and bookshelves on the top. The space is probably 7’-ish wide and average room height. About how much would it cost to have something like this built? By a professional. Please don’t suggest IKEA hacks or other DIY, I am not handy and don’t want to put the effort in lol.
I know this will be regional and depend on materials, etc. but I literally don’t know if we’re talking $1,000 or $10,000 so any narrowing down will be helpful lol.
Several years ago DH and I were going to oversee construction of a home we had designed with an architect. We were going to hold the construction loan, so we got several bids for everything that we would need. The cabinetry bids for the entire house (kitchen, 3 bathrooms, a custom built-in) ranged from $7,500 to $16,500. These were all going to be custom built cabinets like what you are wanting. So I would think a single cabinet like you described would be in the $1000 range.

We had existing bookshelves, but had a cabinetmaker come and build a media console in the center, a bridge across the top, replace the doors, and replace the scalloped trim. I believe it was about $3.5k?

Later, when we were building our addition, the contractor had his guy (not a real carpenter/cabinetmaker, just a handyman) put in built-ins in the bedroom and the living room. The bedroom built-ins were $5k:
And the living room built-ins were $4.8k -- it's hard to see in the pic but it's basically two wide shelves and then a narrow shelf at the end:
We're outside Philly if it helps...HCOL but not IHCOL.
I just had this done and I'm so impressed with the results. It was a plain wall with a super basic brick fireplace. Upper shelves and lower cabs added to each side, and then I had the carpenter redesign the mantle surround with craftman-inspired style columns flanking the fireplace and a board & batten wall above the mantle. Also crown moulding, baseboard. It was $4k.
ETA: this was my inspiration photo and it's very similar to this (but brick fireplace).
I got a quote for built ins for maybe 8 feet across with 9 foot ceilings. Only difference was the built ins had to be built around my radiator (that has a nice cover). It was $6k. Instead I opted for custom bookshelves from room and board, which should be delivered by the end of the month. I ordered them so long ago but I think it came in around $2k? Reviews were great so we decided to go for it.
Do you remember the built ins from my old house? We had a carpenter do them. We saved a ton of money because he used upper kitchen cabinets from Home Depot for the base and then custom built the top/shelves/other cabinets. It was about $3k
