We have a couch on the den area outside our bedroom and he sleeps there most nights. But my H is a firefighter and works overnight 2x/week so I usually let my pup sleep with me those nights. He takes up too much room to sleep w/ us every night.

Crate. The crate is downstairs. Actually we have two dogs. One dog we completely don't trust--she would need to be crated at night. Even though she is completely trained, she WILL take an opportunity to pee in the house if given to her. So she has to be crated. Our other dog would be fine not being crated, etc--but we can't crate one and not the other. So they are both crated at night.
We generally try to keep our dogs downstairs at night so our two cats have a dog free zone. There is no aggression but the dogs will eat cat food and otherwise not give the cats any personal space. Our sweet girl who we said goodbye to in the fall slept on the landing of our stairs and that worked out perfectly. There was a carpet there so it sort of became her dog bed. Our remaining dog who we adopted over the summer is crate trained and still doesn’t have the best manners so he is in there until either H or me comes downstairs in the morning. He is a good boy and even if the kids are awake first he will lay and watch them play without barking to be let out of the crate. I am not terribly strict so I know eventually we will transition away from the crate but for right now he doesn’t mind so we are sticking with it.
In bed between me and H. She sometimes will jump down during the night to sleep on "her" blanket, but she starts and ends with us.
We got her as a rescue when she wsas 3 ish and decided she would not sleep on our bed. We lived in an apartment. The first night we got her, when we went to bed, she was in the living room in a crate and we were in our bedroom. She started to cry, we ignored her. Less than a minute later, she was on the bed happy as can be - because she knew how to get out of the crate. The next night I tried to make her stay on her bed in our bedroom, but it was laughable - she thought we were playing. So yeah.
ETA: She's a 15 lb. poodle/bichon mix, so she doesn't take up that much room and she likes to touch H when they sleep so she's never in my way.
We just lost our dog before the new year, but she originally slept in a crate when H and I got together. Eventually we allowed her to sleep in our room on her own bed on the floor (I am very very anti-bed sharing with a dog). She was a very quiet golden retriever who never barked, but we had one incident at our old condo where some drunk person was confused and tried to use their key to get into our unit and she freaked the fuck out and went crazy as soon as she saw that I was somewhat distressed. I felt somewhat safer with her nearby after that.
When I first rescued my dog, he slept on my bed. When I got pregnant, he got kicked out and started sleeping downstairs on his bed. It was a rough transition the first few nights, but now everyone sleeps better.
Stella basically had her own room. She sleeps on one of the guest beds and comes out in the morning for breakfast lol.
Donny WAS on a dog bed in our room, but H started letting him sleep up on his side so now that’s where he sleeps. I’m mostly ok with it as long as he stays on that side and doesn’t get in the middle. Sometimes he wakes me up jumping up when H comes to bed (an hour and a half after I do), but it’s not that big a deal most of the time.

My first dog - she slept in bed with me and had her head on my ankle most of the time
Next dog - she started in her crate and then moved to our bed (between me and DH) and then she got to be 100 lbs and we kicked her out of bed and she slept on the floor next to the bed. She hated dog beds.
Current dog - she sleeps in her crate. She loves her crate. We tried not putting her in the crate at night, but she seemed to be anxious and just wander/pace the house and would pee random places. We put her crate back up and it was like she was in heaven she was so happy. Now she goes to bed about an hour before me and will just go in her crate and go to sleep and I shut the door to it when I go to bed. (Her crate is beside our bed)
Day She claimed an old ugly chair in one room (which I was planning to move to the basement) and a blanket in another. Would include her crate if I was back working in an office.
Night She has her own bed. She has eaten any "dog bed" we've given her, plus the pile of blankets on the floor we tried once.
Our latest attempt, and what seems to be working so far, is a crib mattress on the floor. We added a cushy mattress topper to it under the crib sheet to make it nice and comfy for her and so far it has worked. Haven't even seen her try to eat it, which she would have already by now.
Our male Grey sleeps on his dog bed. Our old Pug sleeps in bed with us and in the morning, our female Grey leaves her dog bed for our bed. I think she is getting cold.

The 170 lb magnificent beasts (Great Danes) are allowed on the bed only when the dog sheet is on with DH until I come to bed.
Then, they have dog beds in our room. All I have to say is “time to get on your bed” and the jump down and get situated in their beds for the night.
At 6am when DH gets up, they are allowed back on the bed. They have learned do NOT touch me until I wake up.
Funny story. Big boy used to sleep under the bed as his man cave. You would only see a paw from under the sheet. Then only his head could fit. You would see everything but his head which was behind the sheet - even though he thought he was hiding. Now, none of him fits.
Our dog was crate trained and slept in his crate in our room. But then he was neutered and I felt so badly did him we took him into our bed. It was not meant to be a permanent change but 3 years later, he's still in our bed. We've tried to let him sleep with the kids (who have nice big beds and who would die to sleep with him) and he will snuggle with them for an hour or so and then scratch at the door to get out and come to "his" bed 🙄 he's incredibly spoiled.
We have one dog (surprise, he's a corgi!) and he weighs about 32lbs. We have a dog bed for him in our room and have bought him at least a half a dozen dog beds in his eight years and he never uses them. He'll lay NEXT to them, but not in them. So he sleeps in our bed and has been since he didn't need to be crated at night.
We have a king size bed and he takes up a ridiculous amount of room in it for not being a large dog. I don't mind, I sometimes share my pillow with him, but it bugs DH. But he doesn't have the heart to kick him out of bed so he just moves him, lol. We used to have dog stairs and now we have a bench at the end of our bed since his stubby legs don't let him jump high enough to get into our bed from the floor.
ETA - Our boy is a VERY heavy shedder so we have a light coverlet that we have over our sheets and weighted blanket that collects all his dog hair. We wash it weekly and when company comes we fold it nicely at the end of our bed to hide the fur. We're talking about what we're going to do with our bedroom after we finish some other spaces in the house and one day we'll have a nice looking bed again... but we'll probably still need a dog fur blanket, lol.
Our guy also has had no interest in the many dog beds we have gotten him. We did just get him another fluffy one for the office because he lays at my husband's feet and he's always worried he may roll over him accidentally and after being put in the bed he's stayed there and snoozed a few times. It's the first dog bed he's shown any kind of interest in. And it is actually the smallest of the beds we've tried so maybe he just likes to be cozy? He's 27 lbs.

Bed, and no regrets. She is super warm and cozy, sleeps under the covers so we can still move the covers around, and I sleep much better with her there to keep me warm. She's 26 pounds. The only annoying thing is sometimes in the summer she gets hot under the covers and pants, then wants out, then gets cold and wants back under. At this point we have a system. She shakes her ears at me and I lift the covers and fall right back to sleep.
At night, she sleeps on a special dog bed blanket that is on the couch. She will not sleep in her crate. We tried to get her to sleep on her dog bed in our room but she whined all night to get on the bed. She does much better downstairs (we now close all bedroom doors).
During the day she mostly sleeps on the floor of my office, within 10 feet of her dog bed.
I saw this today and thought of this thread lol. One of our dogs will paw at you until you lift the covers for her and every now and then will also need a pillow for her head.
He sleeps wherever we happen to be. In our bed when we’re there. In the office when one of us is at the desk. On his bed if we’re in the front room or kitchen. If one of us is in the office and the other upstairs or in the family room/kitchen, he’ll sleep in the hallway where he can watch out for both of us. He’s a good boi.
My dog likes to sleep on the hardwood floor. She has a dog bed and we sometimes try to get her to lay on our bed but she won’t stay up there for long, I think it’s too hot for her. She just likes to lie on a cold floor lol (bernese mountain dog)
In our bed. We tried the crate downstairs, the crate in our bedroom, and a dog bed next to our bed. He hated them all and insisted on sleeping with us. He was more stubborn than us, so we upgraded to a king size bed and gave him.
He sleeps between us (Moral Police) and will take up as much of the bed as possible.
It's changed over the years. As a puppy, he slept in a crate in my bedroom. Then he slept in my bed for years. After we moved, he slept in a dogbed in our room for a few years. Now that he's older, he sleeps in a crate again.
During the day, because all he does now is sleep and eat, he'll sleep on the floor or in one of his dogbeds throughout the house -- wherever is closest to us.

We have 2 dogs that are each roughly 20 pounds. Most nights, one of them starts on our bed and the other one sleeps on the dog bed. Occasionally, they'll swap in the middle of the night. Sometimes one will sleep under our bed for a bit during the night. They usually both end up on our bed at some point though.
