DD (4) had her first cold sore just before Christmas. We let it heal naturally but it took a couple of weeks. She’s developed another one over the weekend. Have you used any products on your child’s cold sore? I called the dr to ask if we could use Abreva and the nurse came back and recommended a natural product called Cold Sores Be Gone which would be great if they sold it in stores. Thursday is the earliest I can get it delivered. Any other suggestions?
She can take acyclovir for this, which is what I take as needed and I took it as a kid. FWIW, as I've gotten older, I get far, far fewer than I did in childhood.

Thanks. The nurse just called back and said the dr would like to see her in person just to make sure it’s a cold sore so maybe she will prescribe that. Our dr is the dr on call tonight so we’re headed in.

The dr told us to use white toothpaste. But ds gets them often. I buy him over the counter cold sore medicine. I try to buy regular strength, not maximum.
We saw the pediatrician and then she told us yes we can use Abreva. Ugh. I appreciate that she wanted to confirm it was a cold sore but that’s over $100 to be told yes to my question.
I will never understand why medical staff are reluctant to prescribe for cold sores. They're annoying and painful and there's an Rx that works! Regardless, sorry you had to go in for that. $100 is a lot for a copay.

My DD got them when she was small. We got an Acyclovir ointment Rx but I think Abreva works in a similar way. And how stupid that you had to go in and pay a $100 copay only to be told that you can use Abreva.
When she was little she got them so often in the winter, but luckily she seems to have largely outgrown it.
