New job so far is pretty awesome. Hilarious thing is that I cannot for the life of me figure out where I am on the org chart and who is my colleague, who I’m supposed to be leading, and who I’m supposed to be following. Like a friend just told me the person I thought was my de facto manager is actually below me on the org chart. ? It’s kind of an odd feeling. The whole above me/below me thing doesn’t matter so much to me until we need to know who is breaking logjams. Am I supposed to take that role, or do I defer? I’ll figure it out with time, I guess. I don’t have any direct reports at least for now but I’m expected to lead a bunch of teams. It’s very strange. Partly this is because the position has never existed. Lucky for me, there are going to be half a dozen or so positions like this for different areas, so I’m sure we will figure it out.
On the positive side, everyone is so nice! And they are very welcoming. Plus the work is super interesting and it’s refreshing to look at areas I know very well from a different angle.

I am so glad, mommyatty. I work in an org like that. It’s a fantastic place to work but it’s a real effort sometimes to figure out who works for who and how.
I have good news — I can afford the person I really, really want to hire! Hoping to send an offer letter out this week or early next. Fingers crossed that they accept!
mommyatty, are you in consulting now? In consulting, DH typically has a career counselor that manages him. But on specific projects those above him and those that he leads changes depending on the project he is on at the time.
Update: We got an email from school that they want to go back full time on Feb 22. I was worried that then I would let go of the nanny, and then if they go remote again have no childcare. They said they feel that with the teachers being vaccinated that they will be full time until the end of the school year. I mean, one can only hope. But how do I know for sure? We just finished a spike, but I know that they found a few cases of the super contagious strain here. But last time when we finished our spike it was lets say June 1, and we didn't get another spike until Nov. 20, so if we follow that pattern we would have 5 months? And then summer camp did go on last year, so I assume it would this year. I also assumed we wouldn't have a pandemic, so you know what they say about assuming.
waverly, That is complicated. Are you able to hold onto the nanny until Feb. 22nd? And pay severance after? A lot can happen with the pandemic in a month, which is why I am wondering if they will really go back.
phdmomma, We have the nanny booked on a month to month basis. She had told my H that she wants to get a more stable job and mentioned March. I definitely think we can hold onto her until Feb. 22. Paying severance is an option. It's just hard trying to plan our lives, and our childcare, and our employee's job on a month to month basis.
waverly, I am, but I’m not going to be doing a ton of billable project work. Mostly my job is big picture strategy. So I guess it’s going to be a lot of negotiation and collaboration, which will be a positive culture shock. It’s funny, as I’m learning about this job, it’s a much bigger deal than I thought it was. One of the meetings I had on the first day, one of the people said, “All three regions collaborated to create this job, so there’s a ton of momentum and fire power behind it.” I didn’t panic, which made me really proud of myself.
waverly, yay for 5 days of school! Sorry that presents a tough decision though.
Our backyard casita installation is starting today! Yay! It's supposed to rain on Saturday and most of next week, so I'm hoping they can get a lot done today and tomorrow.
DDOT: I ordered a ring light for my computer set up to see if that helps with being able to put a virtual background on for zoom calls.. I'm sure everyone's been thinking it quietly, but today a prospect actually mentioned that I must constantly be wanting to nap with the bed right behind me... Spoiler? I do. It's the most comfortable bed in the house, even if it is a twin.
Update: Just got a notice that Champ just passed his pre-travel vet check. One step closer to coming home! Not sure if we'll spill the beans to the kids early or not. Also we're so undecided on the name... neither of us is a huge fan of Champ, but we don't have any better ideas. Normal people would let their kids name him, but... they came up with Jimmy G, Whitey the Ninja, Hot Fish, and Polly Polkadot for the fish. His chances of an extra weird name are... very, very high.
DH has shut down everything except Indy... he'd be a dog named after a man named after a dog named after a dog (for all you Indiana Jones fans out there) and our wedding processional was the theme song to Indiana Jones sooooo.. we may end up there. Or we may let the kids name him and end up with Baby Yoda Tanny Barksalot or it's equivalent.
k3am, depending on if Champ recognizes his name or not you may want to switch it to something that sounds similar. My brother likes to hang with his new dog for a few days before deciding on a name so he can judge its personality.
DD's class is actually doing a project! An animal project which DD has done a bunch already but it is still a project. She choose coral as her animal. I'm over here laughing because her entire class told her that coral was a plant not an animal.
DDOT: I got a credit to Stitch Fix so gave it a shot and the first box arrived today. They nailed it! I am actually considering keeping everything as long as it all fits. I'm kind of amazed. I think I'm going to keep it going quarterly to just give me a quick refresh every couple months.
k3am, we got two cats who already had names during COVID. One, we tried to change his name, and nothing stuck. His name is the same as my deceased father in law, which is just weird. The other we changed but we kept the same first sound so he would respond to it. So it may take you a few tries to come up with something to puppy will respond to.

I got an email from ds’s teacher that he hasn’t done x y and z and I’m over it. DL sucks. He needs to be in person.
Then we had our first package stolen from our porch. They got our toilet paper so we are out our $30 but I’m annoyed because I asked the kids to bring it in, they didn’t, and I didn’t check and now it’s gone. 4:55AM we have video but with masks and taillights you can’t make our anything specific enough to identify anyone. It’s annoying.
I’m too busy with real work to deal with additional annoying life things.
sandandsea, I told DD's teacher that if an assignment is missing, it's going to stay missing. It's not like she actually grades them, in our case, so I'm trying not to care.

My attorney contacted me with dates for a deposition in February, so I'm hoping things will get moving again.
My new neighbor is a 24 year old Instagram model from a wealthy family, drives a Range Rover and is starting up a clothing design company. I can't figure out why she is renting the apartment above my garage.
186momx your DD’s class is wrong! Coral is an animal! (Kind of) My DD is also doing a project right now on coral and that’s what I learned yesterday from her.
sandandsea, k3am, DL really sucks, DS particularly had a hard time of it with all sorts of teacher complications. Which resulted in us pulling him from the district. Although when the private school went online for the holiday season here it was way better than when he was doing it at the district, with a combination of a more prepared teacher and better resources. Here the public schools still haven't said anything about opening in my town. The two neighboring towns are bringing kids back, but not ours. Which is now making me wonder if we should stay private next year (we were in the public schools and happy with it before the pandemic), because who knows if the school district will actually open for in person learning.

We just got our dog's DNA test:
67% American Pit Bull Terrier 8% Chow Chow 6% Bull Dog 4% Rotweiller 4% German Shepherd and the rest is super mutt: Boston Terrier (??) and American Bulldog
I guess I shouldn't be surprised there is so much pit bull in there but I had convinced myself somehow there was lab and stuff. Not true apparently, she's 100% street dog.
