Why can't DD teacher every give her any positive feedback. Everything is always negative. DD sent her her animal research notes asking for her opinion. DD is so worried about being a show off because her teacher implied it that she isn't putting any energy into the project. DD got a response back this morning which brought her to tears. Her notes are garbage because they weren't in the graphic organizer model so she needs to start over. Finally got DD to calm down and to reply back. She stated she doesn't understand the organizer and maybe she should just switch her project to something she already did. She doesn't want to go to class and the email made her cry. Now my phone is blowing up with seesaw messages. I have my own work fires to deal with this morning. Ugh a Monday Tuesday for sure.
DD: sad post.. well, mom sad anyways. A couple weeks ago, DD figured out that Santa isn't real. She seems okay with it, but I'm sad about it. Anyways, she's now putting together all the other lies we tell. But she's structured it in her head in the most disturbing way. Last night it was.. "Hey, you know how Santa died? Is the Easter Bunny dead to me now too? He's not real either, is he?" Eventually we're going to kill off the tooth fairy too, I'm sure.
186momx, umm...what is a graphic organizer model? I like write research papers for work (journal articles) and have no idea what that is? Also, why does it need to be in that model? The teacher would be getting an unpleasant email from me about crushing my kid's spirit.
k3am, DS asked about all of this in December. I made a deal with him that I would be honest, but that if he told DD he would no longer be getting presents from any of these mythical people. Also, that now that he knows, he gets to help. He was super pumped to bite the heads off of all the cookies that we left out for Santa.
phdmomma, yes, DD is super excited that she "gets to be a Santa" next year. But man, her phrasing that all these people are dead is something else lol..
phdmomma, fold your paper into 4 squares. Put each of your questions (only 3 allowed) into a square and write notes about that question in that square. The 4th square is for your sources. It makes no sense to me. DD can do venn diagram just fine when comparing stuff. She prefers to type out her questions and then voice type her research below the questions and copy and paste the websites into her google doc. It is neat organized and makes sense to her. I don't get why her teacher is forcing specific models on the kids.
k3am, DD knows but won't say anything. I got a lot of winks with the lost tooth Friday night. She left it on the coffee table and was upset the tooth fairy didn't come. I was like it wasn't in your room for the fairy to find. DD's response was well I left there so it would be easier and the fairy wouldn't wake me up.
Got a response from DD's teacher. DD seems upset with me because I corrected her research. She must do this project exactly like I say and that she will use these note taking habits for the rest of school. She hopefully will sign in to class and we can discuss after class and that this project is supposed to be challenging. I didn't look at the seesaw messages until lunch as I was busy working. DD didn't stay on as teacher didn't ask her to during class. I logged her in and told her she had to sit through class but could keep her camera off. DD asked me if she could just work on the project how she wants to and take notes that makes sense to her. I told her yes and I would figure out the stupid 4 square note thing at night this week.
186momx , Teachers do this to teach kids how to take notes. I don't understand the method, but there are a lot of kids who never learn how to organize their thoughts (I was one of those) and for grading purposes I understand wanting all the projects in the same format.
Prime example of playing the game and following instructions. Things that will help as she grows up and joins the work force. My boss likes things in a certain format. How I get there is my business, but the end product must look like how he has specified.
I think that your solutions of doing what makes sense in the moment and reorganizing it to the teachers request is the way to go.
I don't say this to be mean at all or to judge you or your daughter so please don't take it that way. I am just trying to share the other side.
ETA: As for crushing your daughters spirit and the negativity well I don't have a good answer for that.
