With the tile that goes up the wall behind the vent hood, is it hard to keep the tile clean? We are thinking of doing a white subway tile and are wondering if white grout is too much trouble. What do you think?
Our tile backsplash had white grout originally, and I didn't notice it was dirtier behind the stove than elsewhere. We removed the grout and redid it when we chipped out and replaced some accent tiles, so our grout is gray now, but it didn't seem prohibitive to me if white grout is what you'd prefer.
We have white tile and white grout. My sister also has it and so do my grandparents. I've never noticed any of them to be dirty (or dirtier than other areas). Also now there is grout that is basically stain free, so get that and it's easy to clean!
We very rarely have to clean the backsplash behind the stove. I wouldn't be too worried about it at all. And ditto to the comments about grout with sealer - we have very light gray/almost white grout in our shower and haven't had any issues with it.
I have white tile and white grout in my new construction house I've lived in for two months. I can absolutely see where the grout is dirty and so far haven't been able to get it white again. I'm definitely team gray grout.
We have white subway tile behind ours with gray grout (on the lighter side of gray) and the only thing I've noticed is at some point something with grease or oil must have hit it just right and it stained the grout so we have one tiny spot in our grout that looks slightly darker. Drives me crazy every time I notice but I'm the only one that has noticed it as far as I know. I also like how the gray is more distinct of a line than white.

I must be a messy cook, because the tile/grout behind our stove is definitely more dirty than the rest of the kitchen. Food splatter, oil splatter, it gets more greasy which makes dust more difficult to get off, etc. Our tile isn't white, and neither is our grout (thankfully) so it isn't easy to see but it definitely needs to be cleaned more frequently.

We have marble tile with white grout. It does get dirty, but the grout is easy to clean. The marble on the other hand is a PITA. It's sealed, any most splashes can be cleaned, but there are some grease spots that I can't get out. As long as you avoid something porous like marble you'll probably be fine.
My tile doesn't look dirty behind my cooktop but I hate it and am actually in the middle of pricing out a new backsplash that is solid surface- same slab that is our counters. I love the look and the ease of keeping it clean.

What bothers you about the tile backsplash?
We did a full kitchen remodel abt 3 years ago and I was never happy with my backsplash selection. But I’m also a neat freak AND I cook a lot. I can’t help but notice little splatters as I cook. I do wipe it up and it doesn’t look bad. But I can’t help but think abt how it’s not fully clean. A full slab backsplash would solve that issue, plus I think it looks totally amazing. I just hope it’s not too expensive. I’m in the process of getting quotes.
I have white subway tile but with gray grout. I like the contrast given we also have white cabinets and colonial white granite counters. I do a deep clean every two weeks of my kitchen and use a toothbrush to scrub the grout. In the meantime I wipe down as necessary with Clorox or lysol wipes. Hasn't been an issue.
