We have light fixtures over the mirror above each sink in our master. I prefer the light from those for getting ready and applying make-up. Technically, I think side lights at head level are supposed to be best, but those didn’t work in our design. My husband typically uses the recessed lights.
If you will be doing make-up in that mirror, I would recommend going with sconces instead of a fixture above the mirror. You can have the mirror lights and overhead lights put on two different switches even if you want.

Hmmm. I need to see if size wise that could work. We went with a pretty big mirrored medicine cabinet so I may not have space.
We have an overhead light in our bathroom, but I mostly use the vanity lights. I do think you will want something, whether it's over the mirror or sconces.
We opted for over the mirror because I didn't think we had space for sconces. Might sconces be better? IDK. I've been satisfied with these.
