We had two major storms last year which damaged some of our siding. We have insurance money to cover some small areas of siding, but not the whole thing.
-House is 20 years old. Original vinyl siding. -Siding is white and will stay white (options are limited because of our brick) -Minimal damage is on all 4 sides of the house, only one small piece is visible from our driveway, none from the road. -Insurance has determined there is a reasonable substitution for the siding, though the projection is very slightly off -Gutters will all be getting replaced either way -We have no plans to move, but have had to move for my H’s job in the past with little notice. That’s unlikely now, but we’re never certain other than to say we won’t move to another house in this city
Options: 1. Use insurance money and do the minimum, which I think would be to replace one side of the house completely, then use the undamaged pieces to replace damaged pieces on other sides of the house. (Minimal OOP expense) 2. Do a full wrap of the house. (OOP approx 10K)
We can afford the OOP expense, but it would delay other projects, like updating the master bathroom and kitchen.
I don’t know if we should take this opportunity to replace all of it for significantly less than it would cost us without insurance or if we should just fix what’s broken and move on to other projects.
When you say that the "projection is very slightly off" do you mean that the new siding options look slightly different than what is on the home now?
No, they look identical, but how far the bottom lip sticks out is like 1/16th of an inch difference. I can’t tell when you just hold it up next to the existing siding. However, I think I’d notice if we just replaced a few strips. Those things tend to bother me A LOT, which is why we’d do one whole side for sure.
If you resided would you consider cement board/hardywood or just do vinyl again? I think my consideration would be whether it's an opportunity to upgrade or change to something you like better. If you don't plan to change it, I would probably just reside 1 side of the house and fix the portions of the house where it's damaged.
FWIW, we have alumnium siding on our house and hardywood on the addition. It pretty much looks the same when it's all painted white.
Vinyl siding can last up to 40 years. I'd be hesitant to replace all of it if it is otherwise in good condition aside from the one side. I personally would choose Option 1.
FWIW we have aluminum siding on our house which is coming up on 50 years old and we're going to paint it this year to hopefully get another 5 or so years out of it. I tend to fall in to the if ain't broke, don't fix it category for things on the exterior of my home.

We would just do vinyl. In our area, it's almost exclusively what people use as siding. I'm not sure if it's weather or just what people do here (Iowa), but I don't think there's any added value in a different kind of siding, at least in our neighborhood.
We decided to just fix what’s broken. Now that leaves us with money that we were willing to spend immediately that we’re now going to spend on other things.
New lights for our deck. Looking for white, non-solar lights because I like having them on a switch so they’re only on when we’re out there. That’s proving to be hard to find! New lights for the front of the house New front door New shutters Not sure what else!
