What have you been reading this week? Have any Reviews/Ratings/Recommendations?
QOTW: Do you purposely try to read across multiple genres of books (historical fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, etc) or do you just mostly stick to the genres you like best?
I just finished A Court of Silver Flames yesterday. I loved it! I have had a very hard time getting into books lately and haven't finished much of anything. It's why I haven't been here.
QOTW: I don't like non-fiction. Otherwise I will read anything if the storyline sounds good.
I’ve been slowly chipping away at What Could Be Saved. I don’t know what my problem is. It’s not a short book but it’s not that long either (450 pages). It’s actually really good and it’s been a special journey for me because like the protagonist, I spent part of my childhood in Bangkok. All the sporadic Thai colloquialisms are giving me intense nostalgia.
QOTW: I generally stick to my preferred genres but do go outside my bubble to read a highly recommended book or something for book club here.
The Survivors by Jane Harper - I have loved some of her previous books, but I think this is one of the weaker ones.
She Come By It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs by Sarah Smarsh - I *loved* this. It's mainly deals with how Dolly Parton is a feminist, though she doesn't go by that label, and all the great things she has done and achieved to support women. I'm not a country music fan, but I am now a Dolly Parton fan.
QOTW: In the last four years I purposely tried to read an equal number of books for each of my non-preferred genres, mainly to try to expand my reading. This year I am saying to heck with it and reading what I want, when I feel like it.

I read the first three books in that series and I hated Nesta in those, so I am reluctant to pick this one up because I can't see how she can redeem that character for me. So I am still sitting on the fence about it. I also heard she really upped the explicit romance scenes in that book, which is fine for me personally, but I am disturbed that she did so when the series was originally marketed as Young Adult. Maybe I am an old prude, but I don't know if I would feel comfortable with a pre-teen reading that kind of content. It should have been marketed as an New Adult series instead.
Finished: The Duke & I, Bridgertons #1 - well it didn't suck, but it wasn't great. I'm not entirely sure how it became as show as there is basically nothing from the book that matches the show except the 2 families and some names thrown in. Still debating book 2 when my hold comes up.
Currently Reading: Lucy Score just had a new one come out yesterday, Forever Never, so I started it. Not far enough in.
QOTW: I just want to read books that don't suck. I've got a few KU authors that I'm loyal to and try to read some of the best sellers, but then there are the ones that are JUST AWFUL and they end up with a 4 star average on goodreads. So I can't decide if it's me or is the bar just that low?
I have found so many editing issues, grammatical errors, and typos in books. It's really annoying, but at least I get mine from the library and aren't paying for them. I even wrote an author because she repeated a day in 2 chapters and she brushed me off. I was trying to help her!

I think it has been classified as a New Adult series now. I hated book 3 of the series so I was on the fence as well but I really enjoyed it. There were a few things that bugged me (and the sex scenes are a bit much) but overall it was a big improvement. Nesta’s journey was very satisfying.
I agree I would not a teen reading it. Nope nope nope.
We Came, We Saw, We Left: A Family Gap Year by Charles Wheelan (I really hated him by the end)
Raceless: In Search of Family, Identity, and the Truth About Where I Belong by Georgina Lawton (interesting and conversational)
The Woman Outside My Door by Rachel Ryan
You Were Never Here by Kathleen Peacock
Inheriting Edith by Zoe Fishman
QOTW: I mostly stick to the same books. I don’t like historical fiction pre 1960s, I don’t like science fiction or fantasy in book form. I will drift slightly into “supernatural” like the Simone St James mysteries, the Kathleen Peacock mystery above unexpectedly had a main character that had brief visions and that was ok or Sourdough which was pretty much straight fiction but with sentient bread lol but that’s a tiny fraction of the books I read. I don’t read romance really but I have read some of lighter beachier books like Jennifer Weiner.
I also don’t like trilogies which seems more popular in certain genres. I don’t see any reason to push myself to read things I don’t like. At my age I don’t think my interests are going to drastically change.
I finished and loved Better Luck Next Time by Julia Claiborne Johnson — set on a ranch for women wanting a divorce in Reno in the 1930s. Quirky characters, not too heavy but not brain candy either. Now reading A History of What Comes Next by Sylvia Neuvel. Weird but good so far, as all of his books that I’ve read have been
QOTW: I don’t make a point of trying different genres, but I’ll try whatever sounds good. Mostly I end up in the same genre ballpark.
I finished The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah last weekend and loved it.
Currently reading Take a Hint Dani Brown. It's in the same series as Get a Life Chloe Brown. I don't think I like this one as much, but I'm still enjoying it. I really like how this author writes about certain topics. One of the characters has anxiety so I can really relate.
I like to read lots of genres! Historical fiction is probably my favorite, but I also like mystery, fantasy, romance, and really anything that sounds interesting. I like variety!
Finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. 5/5 LOVED!
Reading China Dolls by Lisa See. So far so good, although it doesnt seem up to par with her other work for some reason. Maybe I'm not far enough into it yet.
I tend to stick to the genres i know i like, which are pretty varied. I acoid those that i dont usually enjoy: the classics, mystery, sci-fi, anything with time travel. There are too many books to spend time reading things i dont want to!

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillio - I read this along with my 3rd grader for school. I liked the writing and the characters but I thought the story itself was kind of lacking.
The Outsider by Stephen King - Really good. I stayed up way to late finishing it because the last 2 hours were unputdownable!
Lover Mine by J.R. Ward reread on audio.
QOTW: I don't really pay too much attention to genre. I really like a lot of different genres and wouldn't be able to pick my favorite. So I just read what sounds like a good story.
I'm actively reading The Dutch House, Explain Pain (this is the worst formatted ebook ever, but it's interesting and returns in 2 days so I need to finish), and listening to So You Want to Talk About Race, and less actively reading Stamped from the Beginning (I make progress about once a week).
QOTW: I tend to gravitated towards sci-fi, fantasy, horror, speculative fiction, and then non-fiction of things that I find interesting (often medical), but I'm part of two IRL book clubs where the women tend to pick literary fiction, so I read a lot of that too. I do like strong character driven stories (really enjoying The Dutch House), so I'm fine with literary fiction, I just don't tend to always pick it on my own. But really the only books I actively avoid are romance and insipid chick lit (I can't deal with cringe relationships, they make me mad).
Although, one of my book clubs is due to read another Ivan Doig book in a few months and I'm considering skipping, but I HATED how boring the other one we read was.
