My bf filed his taxes in early February and he got notification they were accepted 2/12. He received his State refund but is still waiting for his federal. The status just says “pending.”
This year he got to claim head of household and claim one child due to a change of his custody in 2020. He never claimed either child since divorcing. Could this be the hold up?
It is a significant amount since he was able to file head of household. Do we just wait this out? Is there anything he can do?
There’s never any rhyme or reason why some returns take longer to process.
The IRS didn’t even begin accepting returns until Feb 12th, so I’m sure there was a big backlog to start on that day.
It could have something to do with the head of household/claiming his child but there’s nothing to know for sure until they send you a letter or provide a refund.
There was something about the child tax credit and not releasing those returns until March. I don’t remember the details. But I think he’s still well within the range of “this is normal.”
Thanks all! My taxes are super simple, and I get my refund usually within 10 days or so, so I was confused. I also only get $1k or so back, but he’s waiting on more money.

Did the mom file her return yet? It is possible there is a problem with he kid he claimed ss#. We often had problems with kids who went back and forth between parents. It is usually a simple fix, but it throws the IRS way off.

No idea. I’m sure she filed but she isn’t suppose to claim her this year as is noted in the court documents.
I’m sure bf doesn’t want to ask the mom. I’m hoping IRS will contact him if they need something?

@roc a bee even if she didn’t claim the kid, but she used the same software as last year, sometimes it carries the ss# forward and and claims the dependent care expenses or something else and the irs flags the SS on another return. Hopefully he will get his refund or a letter soon
The IRS is significantly understaffed and is behind on everything. I am just now getting acknowledgments for 2020 extensions that were filed last summer. The returns were filed on or before the 9/15 and 10/15 tax deadlines, and i am getting failure to file notices for several of them. The IRS has cashed the checks so they've received the returns, but havent yet processed them. In the same week, i got both a failure to file notice and a refund check for the same entity! Basically, it's a shitshow right now.
Does anyone know that since his return was accepted, if the stimulus will be calculated on his 2020 return?
The stimulus for the kids has been an issue all year. Now we have it in writing that he can claim 1 kid, we are hoping he will receive the most recent stimulus.
Yes it says “return is being processed.” Maybe it feels like a long time because we filed on the same day, and I received my refund 2ish weeks ago.
This is me!
Well kinda. Filled right away, never had any issues, got state immediately. Still waiting on a 3k refund from federal. IRS site says pending. I even spoke to my financial planner about possible issues and he couldn't think of anything that would mess it up.
Super frustrated.
They say 90% of refunds are paid out in 21 days and now we are over a month. Trying to remember that we didn't actually do anything wrong.

Well, as it shows in this thread, you’re not alone.
That was comforting to me. Because yeah, I went into a panic mind spiral for a bit.
Not sure if anyone else is still waiting but we got our refund this morning.
My H was furloughed for 2 weeks over the spring and summer so he filed for unemployment. I guess they flagged any of those returns because they knew the stimulus would impact our refund amount.
I’m so glad he finally got the refund and stimulus. We filed with TT on 2/11, it was accepted on 2/12, and we’re still waiting. 😔 IRS says it is still being processed and there is no date attached. He was laid off at the end of 2019 so we didn’t get either stimulus last year because of his severance package putting us over the income limit. We claimed the recovery rebate, received unemployment, and had about $30k in self-employment income with some write-offs so I imagine we have sent up all kinds of flags. It’s been almost 6 weeks so I’m hoping we get something soon. We are also missing out on the 2021 stimulus because they have taken to long to process our refund. DH is in an interim position that is not likely to last and I would really like to not have to wait until 2022 for another recovery rebate which is why I filed to early. Bummer for us, I guess.
