It's the moment you have all been waiting for! :-D
As many of you know by now, every year we have an Oscar party with food themed to the Best Picture nominees. Ideally they'd be puns on the movie title (e.g., "Corndog Millionaire" for "Slumdog Millionaire"; "Up in the Éclair" for "Up in the Air"), but if we need to we've gone outside that to make it something prominently featured in the film (e.g., milkshakes for There Will Be Blood). A full slideshow of previous foods, or at least for as long as I've been altering posters to match, is here:
Only 8 best picture nominees this year, so I get a bit of a break. The party will also be all-virtual, so I may be shopping these out for some of our virtual guests to make, so ease is probably going to be prioritized over punniness. That said, here's the nominees:
Sound of Metal Mank Promising Young Women The Father Judas and the Black Massiah The Trial of the Chicago 7 Nomadland Minari
So, lay them on me...what punny foods would you like to see make the menu this year?
Sound of Fennel/Pound of Fennel (roasted fennel) Plank (salmon cooked on a plank of wood) Promising Young Cinnamon Bun The Father - I’m stumped Foodies and the Black Massiah Judas and the Black Matzo The Trial of the Chicago-style Pizza/Hot Dog SnoMadland (sno cones) Sloppy Joemadland (loose meat sloppy Joes, or New Jersey-style sloppy Joes - club sandwiches with slaw and Russian dressing) Bean-ery (bean salad, bean dip)
Also, I had no idea the Oscar nominees were being announced and haven’t been to the movies in ages (COVID aside), but once I saw it on Twitter I ran here to see if this thread was posted yet 😂
I always love looking for this list! The Father is adapted from a French play (it's also nominated as best adaptation), so could you do something with Le Pere/Pear?
I didn't know how Minari is pronounced, or that it is a food already. I was going to suggest "caliminari."
I have a couple of ideas for Sound of Metal. One is just, "Clink!" for a sparkling wine toast. The other idea is something like, "Scent of Petals" or "Pound of Petals" and make something that has edible flowers, or a drink that uses lavender or rose syrup, or maybe a lemon-lavender dessert.
I'm just looking through your pinterest board, and the posters are just so perfect every year. Captain Crunch Phillips. Call me by Lo Mein. Hoho Rabbit.
I love a good pun. They are amazing.
Also Lo Mein fits into a surprising number of Oscar titles lol.
