I fell down a bit of granite vs. quartz vs. marble rabbit hole today, and almost every site I was on mentioned under upkeep that you should seal granite counter tops yearly. I'm pretty sure we've had granite in the past 3 houses we've lived in over the past 12 years, and I've never heard of this or was told to do it/it was being done (when we rented). Am I missing something here? Is this something that really does need done? Yearly?
They say that, but no one does it and I've never seen it be a problem. We did it once in eight years at our old house because we felt like we "should," but I didn't notice any difference.
I feel like this is an urban myth cooked up once upon a time by someone trying to sell chemicals and it just became a thing, LOL.
We're currently in the process of redoing the kitchen. The company we are working with said granite should be sealed every three years. But maybe they could tell we are lazy and were trying to push us into quartz.
Yeah we haven’t done this ever. At our old house our granite was black so I really didn’t care. Our current granite has a lot of light grey, white and pearl spots and I’m just careful to wipe up any markers/paint/food colouring that get on it quickly.
It might depend on the colour of your granite, but honestly, we never did ours in the 10 years we had our house and it looked great when we sold the house.
We been here 7 years and I hate our granite and plan to remodel the kitchen eventually so I refuse to do extra maintenance on it. No issues. Looks just as good (but ugly lol) as the day we closed. 🤷♀️
Our kitchen remodel is still probably 5-10 years off but I have no plans to seal it.
ETA: I don’t know how long ago they installed it but I doubt it was super recently. I don’t do anything particularly harsh to them and I clean with granite cleaner so maybe that plays into them not getting damaged.

Six years and never. It does get some dark spots where water settles, but not sure if sealing would help, and I'm hoping they would actually go away if it was ever able to dry fully.
I have never resealed our granite. The granite at our old house was about 8 years old when we sold the house and still looked brand new. The granite we have now is black and about 13 years old. It could probably stand to be resealed. When we had new, brighter lighting installed over the island, I could see that the edges are kind of dull and not as shiny as the surface. Also, the lady who owned the house before us had a big plant that sat on the end of the island bar for basically the whole time she lived here (like 5 years) and there is a very faint, but permanent ring etched into the bar there. I think if we resealed that would go away. But since we're going to change everything up soon, I won't bother
We had slate floors in our kitchen and powder roommate our old house and we did have to strip and then reseal those. We did it twice and it was painstaking and miserable and it was also really necessary because the slate is so porous. It was a gorgeous floor and I would never, ever, ever suggest it unless I really hated you, lol

We've lived in our house 9 years and never sealed the granite. Never heard of that. Doesn't seem like it needs it.
If it's "supposed" to be done annually, it was probably done annually for the first decade or so the after the kitchen was redone, and then probably not done during the 2 years before we bought the place. The family who lived here before us seemed to be religious about their maintenance until they got divorced...

I've never sealed my light gray granite. I do seal my marble surfaces annually. It's the same chemical for granite, it's not hard to do. Wipe on, wait 15 minutes, wipe off.
