Wow....he lived quite a life. I just finished watching the House of Windsor on Netflix, recommend it for any Royal fans. He was a flawed man, but a part of history nonetheless.

This is a bit morbid, but I wonder how much longer the Queen will be around now. I've known quite a few elderly couples who were married for a very long time that when one spouse passed, the other was quick to follow.

I don’t think they fall into the usual model here. She’s got a significant life (and support) outside Philip which I think is the major factor in those close deaths.
Having said that, she’s 94 - so like - for sure in the next 10 years or so....

That was a really interesting read. I had no idea how much he did for British industry and science or that he was into environmental causes. The comments about the Scottish and the Aboriginal people don't surprise me. I am sure as 20-something year old man in the 1950s it was incredibly difficult to become "the queen's husband." He was a very complex man for sure--lots of flaws with some good stuff thrown in there, too. I'm sure his family will miss him very much. I know Harry talks like he was very close to both his grandparents.
There’s such a rush to blame Meghan that they forgot to blame Phillip’s COVID vaccine.
One of my favorite Golden Girls jokes is when Sofia is mourning the death of her 88 year-old friend, and Rose asks how she died and Sofia said she’d been fighting an oil rig fire.

Another Golden Girls joke popped into my head when I realized he was just a few weeks from turning 100. Sophia said something like “that’s like being tackled on the one yard line!”
I feel bad for his family. He’s one of the last of an entire generation. I can’t even imagine the Queen not being around.

I would agree but she is QEII. The Crown before everything. I actually expect her to live as long as her mom so she should be Queen for another 10 years.
Philip's life and family are more interesting than Elizabeth's IMO. Yeah, they're distant cousins, but the Duke of Edinburgh is the great-nephew of Empress Alexandra of Russia. His mother was congenitally deaf, became a nun, and helped Jews escape Athens during WWII, so is listed as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem and buried in Jerusalem. His favorite sister was a nazi, though she and her family died in a plane crash in 1937. His family fled Greece when he was an infant due to political upheaval.
All that happened to Liz was that her uncle abdicated.

People, the Queen is stepping down shortly, so Charles will become king in duties soon. He isn't going to have to wait for her death to start the process.

Really?!! Wow! That surprised me actually. I was thinking that since she made him wait this long, she'd either skip him over for William or have him wait until she passes.

The royals...they're just like us. Awkward AF holiday dinners and all.
A thought I just had - how much overlap is there between the americans who are into the nitty gritty of the British monarchy and people who really love watching true crime shows? Is this a venn diagram with a lot of overlap? it feels similar to me. Lots of nerdy details and history to immerse yourself in, mostly terrible people, on TV a lot...

I always assumed she was going to stubbornly outlive him and deny him ever becoming King. Like, live to the world record of 122 just to ensure he never became King.
