DH has a ten year old Hyundai that has seen better days. It runs fine, but has stupid problems, like the back window leaks and the wiper fluid line is broken, in addition to some cosmetic damage. Yesterday it was parked on the street in front of our house and someone hit it and drove off. The driver's side door is damaged, but it's still driveable. We did file a police report but don't expect anything to come of it.
We've been planning to get a new car soon anyway, so maybe we'll just stop dragging out feet now. We're both working from home so no dire need for something immediate. Do we bother with insurance? I am thinking we should just donate the car at this point. I don't see the point in repairing it because it seems like it needs a lot. I doubt it would be worth much in perfect condition anyway. What would be the money smart thing to do here?
At 10 years old it will likely total (less your deductible). If you have uninsured motorist coverage the deductible is usually less. It would be a no-fault claim on your record, if that’s what you’re worried about.
I’d let it total, take the money, save it, and buy whenever you are ready to.
*note - I don’t go here but was an insurance adjuster in a past life.
We had an old car hit while parked on the street. In our case the other driver stuck around to give us his insurance info. It was totalled out pretty quickly on body damage alone.
I would call your insurance and see what your options are. You don’t have to file a claim, but you should know all of your options before just donating it.
