Last year during quarantine, I created a beautiful flower bed that stretches the length of my living room in the back of the house, just outside the floor to ceiling windows along that wall. It was a stupid idea. The windows are Northwest facing and get an insane amount of afternoon sun (magnified by the glass) AND I live right near a marsh/nature preserve and our backyard stays sopping wet for a good portion of the summer. I live in Tampa and the afternoon storms can be intense.
I've planted at least 6-7 different types of plants/flowers and they all fail miserably. The mix of the heat/sun and the very wet ground are just a disaster. Does anyone have any other plant/flower recommendations you can make before I just throw in the towel and put grass back?
I don't want ground cover because....snakes.
I also don't want anything too tree - like because the window views are beautiful.
We are on the other FL coast, but we're mostly sand (which is a different battle). What have you tried before? Have you hit a local (non big box) nursery? I'm sure they'll have ideas.
I know there's a pretty native blue sage that does well in boggy areas. Most mints would be happy enough with the sun/water conditions. Maybe Ruellia or a sturdy Plumbago?
If the drainage is the bigger problem there, you might just be better off with planters.
