TL;DR: We need a fireproof/waterproof safe or storage box; any Recs and what important documents do you store where?
We need a new system for storing important documents. Does anyone have a fireproof/waterproof lockable safe they like? Do you store all important documents in one place or have separate systems for storing things?
We have a tiny fireproof/waterproof box where we store our passports, birth certificates, and SS cards. Then have a separate file box for other important documents that should probably be stored in an actual safe or at least a fireproof/waterproof container. Then, copies of other legal documents are in binders on a bookshelf and these should probably also be stored more securely and safely.
Any tips/tricks/recs are welcome! Space is at a premium. I’m decluttering and organizing our home office, which has multiple purposes including: my WFH space, our makeshift home gym, our dog’s “room” and our main coat closet (most of our coats are stored in the office closet since it is the closest closet to the front door).
I would start with scanning anything you can so that you can store it electronically and shred the paper copies. We were able to get rid of way more than I thought we would.

If you go this route, store in multiple secure locations as not all electronic storage is created equally. PSA brought to you by the woman who got rid of a ton of stuff and had the external storage drive we'd bought die an untimely death in less than a year. I think right now we're saving on physical storage and in the cloud.
But yes... there is a LOT of paperwork people are hanging onto that doesn't need to be held.
You might also consider a safe deposit box for things you rarely need, like a car title or SSN card. I personally prefer not to put passports in there though. (Because I forgot it once and almost missed an international flight. Doh!)
Ditto k3am that not all electronic storage is equal. CDs/DVDs degrade over time and solid states can get messed up. For electronic copies, have a primary and a back up, and upgrade them every few (like 3-5) years.
We also use the small fireproof safe at home that you can find at target.
